Designer Faye Toogood recently unveiled her fourth solo exhibition at Friedman Benda gallery in New York City. This latest display features a collection inspired by forgotten artisanal techniques, as well as repurposed and revitalized materials.
The art exhibition titled “Assemblage 7: Lost and Found II” occupies the gallery space in Chelsea, showcasing works made from English oak and Purbeck marble, which are historically significant as they resonate with the nation’s traditional crafting styles and forms.
For the very first time on the East Coast, these works that were previously exhibited in Los Angeles (2022) and Chatsworth House, UK (2023), will be displayed. This exhibit provides a unique, up-close look into Toogood’s renowned poetic and contemplative creative process.
An essential aspect of her work involves translating initial concepts into three-dimensional forms, frequently using clay sculpting. Toogood describes the process as similar to an “archeological excavation.” She explains that the raw material served as a landscape, and she was uncovering hidden treasures within it.
Throughout the gallery, artworks such as Plot, Cairn, Barrow, Hill, Hoard, and Lode depict locations, methods, and materials that have been long-lost to history. Toogood describes their appearance as something reminiscent of prehistoric times. The majority of these pieces, including cabinets and benches, were produced between 2021 and 2023. In the year 2024, a new creation titled Channel was added to the collection. This piece is designed in the shape of a marble bench crafted from three separate slabs.
According to the gallery, these materials hold historical significance as they both reflect and embody the country’s traditional craftsmanship. The wood, specifically, has been given a textured finish through an old method called shellacking, which can be traced back to the 18th century. On the other hand, the stone is sourced from a family-run quarry on the Isle of Purbeck in southeast Dorset, and is meticulously hand-carved and chiseled to produce a polished surface.
Assemblage 7: Lost and Found II is on show at Friedman Benda until March 15.
