Was Sonic 3 Split Into Two Movies like the Game?

With the upcoming release of Sonic 3 on digital platforms, fans are eagerly speculating about what content may have been omitted. It appears that several scenes were left on the cutting room floor during editing, many of which ended up being part of Sonic 4. This has sparked a question among fans: Could it be possible that the third installment in this film series was actually split into two movies?

As a passionate gamer, I’ve been absolutely thrilled by the wealth of behind-the-scenes glimpses SoniColl shared about X, offering a glimpse into some grand plans for this movie. Though the final cut told a compelling tale, there were several scenes that unfortunately had to be trimmed to prevent the story from dragging on excessively. It’s evident that they aimed to create the most epic Sonic film yet, and it seems like some of that magic is being reserved for the sequel.

Major spoilers for Sonic 3 below

In the mid-credits scene of Sonic 3, our blue hedgehog protagonist encounters numerous Metal Sonics. Just as these robotic replicas of Sonic are preparing to attack, Amy Rose swoops in with her reliable hammer for a timely rescue. The shot ends before she utters a word, presumably to allow time for the selection and recording of Amy’s voice actress.

Although the mid-credit scene was fantastic, it appears from storyboard glimpses that they initially intended to include Metal Sonic in the third film, as one board depicts Dr. Robotnik alongside Metal Sonic. However, since this didn’t materialize in the movie, there’s a strong possibility that we might see this scenario unfold in the fourth movie, with some modifications here and there.

In the storyboard, Amy’s scene slightly varies as she rescues Sonic from an oversized Metal Sonic. Given the tight pacing of the third film, delaying the resolution of Amy and Metal Sonic until the fourth movie seems like a shrewd decision. While bigger movies are generally beneficial, knowing when to restrain oneself is always wise.

Interestingly, the film has been divided into two separate movies, similar to how the Sonic 3 video game for Sega Genesis was originally intended to be extensive but the developers faced resource constraints. Since they had numerous ideas that needed to be implemented, the game was split into two parts, with Sonic & Knuckles being released a year later as a continuation.

If you haven’t caught up with Sonic 3 just yet, it’s set to hit digital retailers on January 21st. In the meantime, find out who lends their voice to Shadow the Hedgehog and join him in the game Sonic X Shadow Generations!
