After God of War was re-imagined, the series has evolved into open-world, single-player action-adventure games. Contrary to appearances, it appears that the franchise was considering a storyline where Kratos confronted a fresh pantheon of gods, but recent reports suggest that there may have been alternative plans for Kratos and the world of God of War.
It seems that a multiplayer variant of the game was being developed, but Sony, similar to Concord, chose to abandon the project. However, let’s delve into details about this canceled game.
The Cancelled God of War Multiplayer
According to a Bloomberg report, Sony has chosen to scrap several multiplayer endeavors, including a God of War live-service game developed by Bluepoint Games.
Despite Concord Studio Firewalk shutting down due to a game cancellation, it appears that Bluepoint Games will continue to thrive. A Sony representative has affirmed, “Bend and Bluepoint are esteemed teams within the PlayStation Studios family, and we are collaborating with each studio to identify upcoming projects.
To gain an understanding of the type of multiplayer experience God of War might offer, it’s important to note that Bluepoint Games is a studio known for revamping and enhancing classic games for modern consoles. They have previously worked on remasters for titles like Uncharted, Shadow of the Colossus, and Demon’s Souls. During their collaboration with Santa Monica Studios on God of War Ragnarok, it is likely that Bluepoint was also developing ideas for the multiplayer aspect of God of War.
Previous Multiplayer Versions of God of War
Despite the original God of War series appearing to lose steam during the PS3 era, it should be noted that its multiplayer variant in God of War: Ascension received positive reviews. This revelation was made public back in 2012.
In the multiplayer mode, participants design characters incorporating some of Kratos’ talents, vying for approval from four deities – Zeus, Ares, Poseidon, and Hades. Subsequently, they engage in intense battles involving eight combatants, each striving to achieve distinct goals.
In the multiplayer setting, users construct characters that blend aspects of Kratos’ powers, battling to win over four gods – Zeus, Ares, Poseidon, and Hades. Then, they participate in epic eight-person competitions where each participant aims to complete specific tasks.
It’s uncertain whether this was Bluepoint’s intention for their God of War game, but Ascension has established a standard, so any new live-service game is likely to draw some parallels. Even looking at Ragnarok, the game offers multiple playstyles; one is Kratos and the other is Atreus.
Other Cancelled Multiplayer Games
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been hit by some disappointing news straight from the heart of Sony Entertainment. In my world, we were eagerly waiting for the multiplayer experience in God of War, but it seems like that’s one of several live service titles they had to call off. The sequel to the much-loved Last of Us Factions never materialized, and leaks hinted at a multiverse Spider-Man game titled The Great Web. Even London Studios was working on a game, along with a multiplayer version of the iconic Twisted Metal.
Despite numerous game studios attempting to tap into the live-service gold rush, the genre seems to be waning instead. While Marvel Rivals has succeeded in this endeavor, it’s built on the foundations of games like Concord and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – ambitious projects that unfortunately resulted in significant financial losses.
No release date has been announced for the next God of War game.
