Over the years, the world of Assassin’s Creed has evolved significantly from its early days. However, developers at Ubisoft periodically make adjustments to ensure that newcomers continue to find it exciting and engaging.
In the process of being completed, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has announced alterations in its exploration mechanics. Now, instead of simply scanning each location by climbing designated towers within the game, players will be rewarded for active exploration.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows New Exploration
In a fresh post from Ubisoft, they delve deeply into the innovative techniques for discovery integrated within their game. To ensure an engaging narrative, the creators have crafted the experience such that uncovering new mission details or insights about characters feels like a satisfying payoff for the players.
Charles Benoit, the game director, shares that they aimed to avoid overly guiding the player with icons and markers. Instead, they wanted to create an open world where information served as a key and a form of reward. This approach made sense in the context of playing a shinobi and fighting for information. Essentially, in the game Shadows, players must actively seek and earn information through various means such as spies, non-player character interactions, or simply by observing the world around them. In other words, we want players to uncover all our exciting secrets at their own pace through exploration, use of their spy network, or by carefully observing the game world.
The game doesn’t flood you with information about missions and locations as you explore both land and water. For example, scaling a tall structure won’t show all the missions and icons on your map; instead, it highlights ‘areas of note’ that you’ll need to actively investigate to uncover exactly what lies within them.
Rather than acquiring an Eagle ally to collect data for the player, the players will now assume the role of the Eagle. They can utilize strategic vantage points to identify enemies and even locate useful items.
Indeed, certain choices might simplify the game for specific users. For instance, there could be an option for Pathfinding, which enables players to pinpoint a spot on the map. In this scenario, the game would act like a built-in GPS system, guiding the player towards their chosen destination.
Here’s a compilation of all the new in-game footage:
Scouts and Safehouses
In addition to creating their personalized bases, players can find hidden shelters scattered across the game map. These hideouts enable players to check their entire inventory and function as convenient ‘secure’ teleportation points. Notably, some fast travel destinations are located within enemy territories, so these safehouses offer a strategic advantage for swift and secure movement.
The safehouses will offer a unique feature where players can recharge their ‘Scout’ resource. With a significant portion of the game map remaining undisclosed to the player, Scouts will help uncover additional details about the map. However, it’s important to note that Scouts regenerate only at the end of each season, and for further information, players must spend some in-game money.
Additionally to acquiring data, players have the option to deploy scouts whose role is not only to gather intel but also to calm down or de-escalate a region that’s been flagged as high-risk for the player.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to release on March 20 for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
