A significant number of fans still remember the uproar caused by leaving the Yellowstone TV series, and this was evident when the show’s official Instagram account celebrated his 70th birthday. Naturally, many took the opportunity to criticize the birthday greeting, labeling it as a message from Costner’s former character’s “ex-partner.
Fans of actor Kevin Costner celebrated his 70th birthday on social media, but when a post appeared from the Yellowstone account featuring a straightforward message and an image of Costner as the Dutton patriarch, it didn’t take long for fans to express criticism over sharing the message following the less-than-amicable circumstances surrounding Costner’s departure from the show during Season 5.
As a cinephile, I kicked off the discussion by responding humorously with “When your ex sends you a birthday wish.” Although there was some good-natured banter in this comment, iamshellyshel’s subsequent remark was more straightforward: “Y’all treated him unfairly when sending him off…it’s shameful.” Similarly, C.bowen and freedomtexan1776 expressed their thoughts by saying “TS [Taylor Sheridan] really did him wrong.
Instead of joining the divisive end-of-series conflict that John Dutton experienced on Yellowstone, many others chose to celebrate their own birthdays alongside the show, steering clear of such contentious consequences. It’s clear that there remains a deep passion among fans regarding the disagreement between Costner and Sheridan, but in truth, neither side was completely innocent, and an unwillingness to compromise ultimately led these collaborators to part ways.
Kevin Costner’s Unexpected Departure Still Hangs Over ‘Yellowstone’
Despite the fact that the series has concluded, with numerous sequels and spin-offs still in production, the spirit of John Dutton loomed large throughout the final season starting from its return for Part 2 of Season 5. This was especially true after Costner’s character met his end early on, leaving many viewers feeling that things were never quite the same again.
Originally, the show almost never made a mistake in its first four and a half seasons. However, when Season 5 returned to Paramount for its final episodes, it received its lowest audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Matters worsened as those unhappy with nearly everything presented in Season 5B continued to affect the overall series rating negatively.
Despite heated discussions about the finale of “Yellowstone”, the episodes continued to draw a large audience, and the controversy didn’t seem to impact the upcoming plans for “1923” and spin-off series “The Madison”. Furthermore, the new series, “Landman”, has been a massive hit on Paramount+ since its launch in November, consistently leading their TV rankings.
Meanwhile, Costner has moved away from Yellowstone to focus on his own Western film series titled Horizon: An American Saga. Unfortunately, the initial movie in the planned four-part series didn’t recoup its budget at the box office, leading to a postponement of its August 2024 release date and it remains undecided whether it will have a theatrical premiere. As a result, the future of this franchise is uncertain, as Costner has reportedly invested $100 million into the project and is seeking additional investors to help complete his ambitious pet project.
