Re-experience the heartwarming tale of Kathleen Kelly, portrayed by Meg Ryan, falling for Joe Fox, played by Tom Hanks, once more in director Nora Ephron’s movie “You’ve Got Mail” (1998). This delightful romantic comedy will be available for streaming starting February 1 on Hulu, making it perfect for Valentine’s Day viewing. The film and Kathleen’s charming bookstore, The Shop Around the Corner, both pay tribute to the timeless holiday classic of the same name featuring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan.
In a new twist on the 1940 movie “The Shop Around the Corner,” “You’ve Got Mail” tells the story of Kathleen and Joe, who fall in love through a series of emails after meeting online. Unlike Mr. Kralik and Ms. Novak from the original film, who became pen pals by exchanging handwritten letters, these modern lovers never meet face-to-face until much later in their relationship. However, they share the same intriguing element as their predecessors: both sets of characters are unaware of each other’s true identity until the climactic scenes of their respective films.
It’s fascinating that although You’ve Got Mail remains a favorite among fans, its ratings on Rotten Tomatoes are quite ordinary. Critics’ reviews resulted in the romantic comedy garnering a Tomatometer score of just 70%. Interestingly, the Popcornmeter (previously known as the RT audience score) was only slightly higher at 73%, based on over 250,000 ratings. However, it’s undeniable that when it premiered near Christmas in 1998, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan’s collaboration proved to be a huge success at the box office.
‘You’ve Got Mail’ Was Bona Fide Box Office Boffo
Among Meg Ryan’s best films, “You’ve Got Mail” certainly stands out, but it didn’t make it onto MovieWeb’s list of Tom Hanks’ movies. On the other hand, “A Man Called Otto”, “Finch”, and “Cloud Atlas” were included. However, the popular romantic comedy didn’t rely on critical acclaim when it was released in 1998 to be a massive box office success. People flocked to the cinema to see the duo reunited since their undeniable chemistry in the classic “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993).
In 1998 and 1999, the contemporary remake of “The Shop Around the Corner,” titled “You’ve Got Mail,” earned an impressive $115.8 million domestically during its cinema release. Interestingly, it performed even better overseas, raking in a total of $135 million for foreign markets. As a result, Director Nora Ephron’s romantic comedy amassed a global total of $250.8 million (according to The Numbers). When accounting for inflation, “You’ve Got Mail” would have grossed approximately $482.7 million at today’s box office.
Although ‘You’ve Got Mail’ didn’t top MovieWeb’s list of all-time great romantic comedies, it still ranks as one of the best. On February 1st, you can find out what makes this movie so special when it streams on Hulu.”
Or, in a more conversational tone: “Despite not being named the top rom-com of all time by MovieWeb, ‘You’ve Got Mail’ is still considered one of the best. Come February 1st, you can see for yourself why this movie is so incredible when it starts streaming on Hulu.
