Lost Records: Bloom & Rage – What We Know From This ‘Life Is Strange’ Spiritual Successor

The makers behind the cherished Life is Strange series, known as DONTNOD, are now concentrating on a fresh tale titled Lost Records: Bloom & Rage.

Here’s everything we know so far about this highly anticipated indie drama:

It’s Life Is Strange, But It Isn’t

A significant observation from “Lost Records” is that it shares a similar vibe with “Life is Strange,” but it’s not part of the same series. The creators behind this game are indeed the same, with Michel Koch, who was the original director for both seasons of “Life is Strange,” overseeing the project.

Man, I’ve got to say, the vibe and feel of this game reminds me a lot of my favorite moments with Max and Chloe. It’s like stepping into a vibrant teenage fantasy that takes you back to those days, much like diving into a Young Adult novel akin to a John Green book.

In the story of “Lost Records“, the main theme centers on four old companions who meet again after a gap of 27 years, unexpectedly uncovering a past secret that they had hidden from each other since their childhood days.

Although it may initially appear straightforward, it’s important to understand that this game is often referred to as a spiritual sequel to “Life is Strange.” As per Koch, the game takes significant inspiration from David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks,” Andrew Fleming’s “The Craft,” and Stephen King’s “It.” Consequently, you can anticipate a blend of the mysterious and the otherworldly elements in this title.

Enthusiasts on the Lost Records Subreddit are excitedly discussing their findings from DON’T NOD’s small Alternate Reality Games (ARGs).

Relatable Characters

In the game, the primary characters – Nora, Autumn, Kat, and Swann – each have unique tales to share. These characters are integral to the game, and as players explore Velvet Cove, the game’s imaginary location, they will develop a personal connection with them as they delve into their individual lives.

Just as the characters in “Life is Strange” are captivating, so too are those in “Lost Records.” They offer a charming group that players can easily connect with and understand.

In this game, there’s just one main character: Swann Holloway. The designer made this choice to keep the player engaged since changing viewpoints could disrupt the story’s continuity. This technique was effectively used in Life is Strange 2, where the narrative focused solely on Sean, who significantly influences Daniel’s future through difficult decisions he makes.

In a refreshingly similar vein to Max’s gameplay in the original ‘Life is Strange’, Swann’s actions are evocative. Players guide her journey, peering into the world through Swann’s lens – both symbolically and literally speaking. Swann’s camcorder serves as a tool for capturing significant moments from her companions’ escapades, infusing an emotional layer of nostalgia while creating a distinct atmosphere reminiscent of the mid-90s, a time when grunge and punk rock music dominated teen culture.

The name of the game, “Lost Records”, holds significance, and the recordings that Swann managed to gather on this short journey could potentially form a key aspect of the game’s main storyline.

Choices Matter

The Life is Strange series has always been centered around facing challenging choices, and Lost Records aims to delve deeper into this aspect. Dialogues in the game seem authentic, frequently arising during gameplay interludes. It’s much like the dialogue style found in Oxenfree, where moving around also involves engaging in conversations.

As an enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about the 11-minute gameplay trailer that unveiled a captivating feature: my character, Swann, has the freedom to decide whether to engage in conversations with friends or not. This interactive aspect could potentially strike a chord with introverts like myself, adding an intriguing layer of depth to the gaming experience.

In the 90s timeline, decisions you make could significantly influence events that unfold 27 years later in this game. Given DONTNOD’s knack for creating emotionally charged narratives, it’s reasonable to expect that this game will leave us deeply affected, much like our memories of Arcadia Bay.

Only Two Episodes

Lost Records follows the episodic structure similar to that of Life is Strange, however, it condenses this structure into just two segments, unlike the five episodes experienced by Max and Chloe in their storyline.

In this distinctive setup, the narrative is split into two distinct segments or installments, minimizing the gap between publications and providing a more immediate story experience. The creators of DONTNOD opted for this layout to minimize excessive discussion on platforms like Reddit, allowing for a smoother flow in storytelling.

In Tape 1, titled “Bloom“, we delve into themes of adolescence and growing up’s apprehensions, centering around the characters’ lives during the ’90s. On the other hand, Tape 2, “Rage“, moves forward to the repercussions of their actions, a full 27 years after their days in Velvet Cove.

A Spellbinding Soundtrack

Unsurpassed is DON’T NOD’s knack for gathering indie music, a skill that still resonates strongly. Tracks like Syd Matters’ “Obstacles” and Foals’ “Spanish Sahara,” from Life is Strange, continue to stir up nostalgic feelings within us even today.

For “Lost Records,” the soundtrack is being referred to as a “Mellow Summer,” encapsulating the vibe of the mid-90s. The specific song list hasn’t been disclosed yet, but fans can anticipate the same attention to detail and ambiance that characterized the “Life is Strange” series. Until the official Spotify playlist is unveiled, we are left with only speculation for now.

I’m open to incorporating 1990s music that’s licensed, focusing on tunes from bands like Mazzy Star, Slowdive, or Lush. If we’re going for a more grunge feel, we could also consider adding Nirvana and Pearl Jam to the mix.

As a thrilled gamer, I’m excited to announce that starting February 18, the first episode of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage is dropping for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S! Fasten your seatbelts, fellow gamers, because exactly one month later, on March 18, we’ll be back with episode 2, ready to continue the adventure on the very same platforms. Can’t wait to join you in this epic journey!
