Harrison Ford And Helen Mirren Get Real About Filming 1923 In The Freezing Cold And Why No One Was ‘Overacting’ In It

Over time, we’ve learned about the challenges involved in producing shows set in Yellowstone. From setting up camp like cowboys, contending with scorching heat and venomous snakes during filming, to depicting heavy scenes, it’s no walk in the park. Yet, these talented cast members persevere, creating series that I always look forward to watching. For instance, during the filming of 1923, they battled the harsh winter conditions, and just before the Season 2 premiere on the 2025 TV schedule, Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren discussed the difficulties of working in the freezing cold while filming ahead of time.

In the chilly sequence from Season 1 featuring Cara and Jacob’s encounter with Donald, Mirren aptly described that day as both “frigid” and “invigorating,” using the word twice to emphasize the harshness of the cold. Interestingly, Harrison Ford, in a video for Instagram, confirmed the bone-chilling reality of filming this tense scene, remarking on how truly cold it was during the shoot.

That’s the scene where it was 21 degrees below zero.

Mirren also affirmed this, giving a firm nod, echoing what Ford had said earlier. To put it simply, it was incredibly frigid on that particular day.

In addition to several members of the 1923 cast, the scene was significant as it featured a standoff between Timothy Dalton’s character Donald Whitfield and his henchmen, and Jacob and Cara. Armed with guns, they threatened the Dutton family, discussing the fate of the land surrounding their home. Interestingly, during this time, Bryan Ford and Helen Mirren engaged in an engaging dialogue about how the cold affected their acting abilities, resulting in a balanced and subtle performance by all parties involved.

  • Helen Mirren: And this was unbelievably cold this day.
  • Harrison Ford: And people are still able to make faces.
  • Helen Mirren: Well, maybe it was, like perfect acting, because…
  • Harrison Ford: You couldn’t overact.
  • Helen Mirren: I mean, all you could do was survive.

Essentially, individuals working on any of the Yellowstone series encounter similar difficulties. For instance, during the filming of 1883, actors endured both extreme heat and cold while portraying a journey across the western frontier in wagons. Simultaneously, the cast of Yellowstone had to contend with the Texas heat, among other challenges, during the recent season.

Indeed, the effort put into creating this product appears to be commendable, making it seem worthwhile. As a spectator, I find it difficult to express my gratitude for the authentic sets filmed on location, the genuine ranch work portrayed, and the captivating representation of the American West’s scenic charm that these shows provide.

This behind-the-scenes video from the production of “1923” significantly heightened my anticipation for Season 2! I was already eager to discover how Alex and Spencer made it back to Montana separately, and this snippet brought to mind the hardships that Jacob, Cara, and their fellow characters are encountering at home.

I’m really fond of the series 1923, and I can’t wait to discover what transpires next. Moreover, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they didn’t have to endure freezing temperatures for Season 2 production. But we’ll see if that was necessary once we get more details about the upcoming episodes, which will be available on February 23 for those with a Paramount+ subscription.
