Donald Trump’s second swearing-in ceremony as President didn’t receive the same level of viewership as his first one, which aligns with a common trend for presidents during their second term.
Initial data from Nielsen indicates that approximately 26.05 million viewers tuned in across ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC to watch Donald Trump’s swearing-in as the 47th President of the United States between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday. This number seems to be significantly lower than both of the preceding inauguration viewership figures, although direct comparisons are somewhat complex due to differences in reporting methods.
39.87 million people tuned in to watch Joe Biden’s inauguration on six different networks in 2021, while Trump’s first inauguration in 2017 had an average of 38.35 million viewers. Both viewership numbers were measured between 11:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Eastern Time, specifically before and after the oath-taking ceremony. Unfortunately, detailed viewing figures for that exact half hour during the most recent inauguration are not yet available. It’s possible that viewership on Monday didn’t increase enough during that time to match or surpass the viewership from either 2017 or 2021.
During the time frame of 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Fox News attracted the highest number of viewers, with an average of 10.3 million and peaking at 10.59 million between noon and 1 p.m. This was the second-largest inauguration audience for the network, surpassed only by Trump’s first swearing-in in 2017. The broadcast networks had relatively similar viewership numbers: ABC had 4.7 million viewers, followed closely by NBC with 4.4 million and CBS with 4.1 million. CNN and MSNBC trailed significantly, with CNN having 1.7 million viewers and MSNBC having 848,000.
Unlike Trump’s case, it’s not surprising that he had a smaller audience during his second inauguration because most presidents, such as Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, also saw a decrease in attendance at their second inaugurations compared to their first.
Fox News maintained its lead among cable news networks during primetime hours, drawing an average of 6.1 million viewers compared to 1.1 million for MSNBC and 1 million for CNN. On Monday night, ABC, CBS, and NBC all aired special one-hour programs about the inauguration at 10 p.m., while NBC opted to continue with its entertainment programming. Ratings for the entire evening, including those for the College Football Playoff title game on ESPN, will be published later in the week.
