Date Night Turns Deadly in Shudder’s ‘The Dead Thing’ Trailer

Dating can be quite nerve-wracking, isn’t it? In the upcoming horror flick “The Dead Thing” by Shudder, it’s definitely heart-pounding. The streaming service has recently unveiled a trailer for this chilling horror production. This independent film premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year, then moved on to London’s FrightFest and the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival. If you’re looking for something scary to watch on Valentine’s Day, “The Dead Thing” might just be the perfect choice when it arrives on Shudder on February 14th.

The trailer for “The Dead Thing” leaves viewers intrigued, posing more questions than providing answers – a characteristic of effective trailers. This movie appears to be a slow-burn horror that gradually escalates tension, a genre that may not appeal to everyone but has impressed critics so far. With an impressive 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 25 reviews), it’s gaining recognition for its compelling narrative, Hunt’s captivating performance (remember her as Inadu in the CW’s “The Originals” or Dani Moonstar in “The New Mutants”), and its striking visual aesthetics.

Modern Dating Horror Stories Fueled ‘The Dead Thing’

Regardless of whether we’ve ever dated someone hiding a terrifying supernatural truth, Kane believes that the film The Dead Thing will still resonate with viewers. In a recent chat with PEOPLE, Kane shared some insights on what inspired the movie’s plot.

Working in that office where the movie is based, a colleague of mine often shared tales about her numerous online dating experiences, from the apps she used to the peculiar encounters she had. It all seemed overwhelming, so I jotted down a quick note on my phone, “Internet Dating App Nightmares?”. A few months later, this note sparked the concept for the entire film.

It seems to me that many individuals may find common ground with the feeling of isolation in dating, and it’s possible they sometimes fall into fleeting or draining relationships as a means to alleviate the loneliness prevalent in contemporary dating culture and the dread of solitude.

In this film titled “The Dead Thing“, we have Hunt (known for “The New Mutants“) and Smith-Petersen (“Mad Max: Fury Road“), along with Katherine Hughes (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl“), John Karna (“Scream“), Brennan Mejia (“American Horror Story“), Joey Millin (“Threshold“) and Aerial Washington (“Closing Time“). The screenplay was penned by Kane in collaboration with Webb Wilcoxen. Produced by Matt Mercer and Monte Yazzie, this movie is “The Dead Thing“.

Among the horror movies debuting on Shudder next month are “Little Bites” by Spider One, featuring genre veterans Barbara Crampton and Heather Langenkamp, as well as “The Birthday,” starring Corey Feldman. Originally made in 2004, this Spanish film was directed by Eugenio Mira and only recently saw its release after a delay of two decades.

The Dead Thing is streaming on Shudder from February 14.
