‘Rise of the Empress’ Fantasy Series a Go at Amazon

Prime Video is entering another fantasy realm.

The streaming service owned by Amazon has given approval for a series adaptation of Julie C. Dao’s “Rise of the Empress” novels. This drama features Viola Davis, Forest Whitaker, and Gemma Chan as executive producers. According to the show’s synopsis, it is set in a mystical ancient Asian empire and revolves around Xifeng, a peasant girl who, with the help of a vengeful sorceress, competes to win the affections of the prince.

Crystal Liu, known for her role in American Horror Story, along with James Wong, who has worked on The X-Files and American Horror Story, are set to share the role of co-producers for this upcoming series. The production company behind it is Amazon MGM Studios, as well as JuVee Productions owned by Davis and Julius Tennon, and Significant Productions run by Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi.
