Drew Hancock’s film “Companion” is tricky to critique without giving away crucial plot points (which, for clarity, I will strive to avoid in this review). The movie offers a more thrilling viewing experience if you go into it blind about the events of the first act, prepared for unexpected twists that challenge your initial perceptions. Importantly, these surprises set the story on an entirely new course and gradually reveal deeper themes while introducing further twists… Unfortunately, I can’t delve into any specifics because I believe you should have the same immersive cinematic journey as I did.

Total Running Time: The movie has a runtime of approximately 97 minutes.
In a nutshell, I’m implying that this review serves as a stronger test of trust compared to typical critiques because I won’t delve too deeply into the movie’s details. However, I’ll commend it for its superb storyline construction and encourage you to watch it as soon as possible. The script is cleverly written, keeping you on your toes and eager for what’s next. Moreover, Hancock skillfully balances horror and comedy tones, and the cast delivers a well-balanced and impressive performance overall.
The movie “Companion” features Sophie Thatcher as Iris, a smitten young woman in love with Josh (Jack Quaid). Despite Iris’ belief that Josh’s friends don’t care much for her, including the sullen Kat (Megan Suri), the cheerful Eli (Harvey Guillén), and his jovial boyfriend Patrick (Lukas Gage), they all gather for a weekend of relaxation at a stunning lake house owned by Kat’s wealthy Russian boyfriend Sergey (Rupert Friend).
In a horror movie, contrary to expectations, there’s no peace or relaxation. Instead, intense moments are followed by brief but gruesome violence with heavy bloodshed. The characters’ reactions to this chaos are made difficult due to their secrets and ulterior motives, weaving a intricate web that leads the story on an engagingly complex journey.
Companion is a genre gumbo that surprises with both serious thrills and big laughs.
The film titled “Companion” is crafted with a dark undertone yet designed for enjoyment. It delights in confusing your expectations while subtly unveiling its increasingly ominous narrative under the bright sun and vibrant pastel palette. As it keeps you guessing, you find yourself grinning ear-to-ear with each unexpected reveal. The dialogue is sharp and witty, and there are plenty of amusing visual jokes, but it never sacrifices its dramatic and suspenseful elements for comedy. On the contrary, the humor serves to make you empathize more deeply with both the protagonists and antagonists, heightening the intensity of the emotional investment – so when the story takes a darker, scarier turn, you genuinely care.
In a creative exploration of film genres, this movie doesn’t necessarily give you nightmares, but it skillfully justifies its horror label through expertly built tension and compelling character progression. From the start, Iris’s fear resonates with us all, as many can identify with the unease that comes from joining a new social circle, especially when things spiral out of control. As her predicament worsens and the chaos intensifies, it manages to tap into your deepest fears effectively.
Sophie Thatcher further establishes herself as a tremendous talent leading the fantastic cast of Companion.
Sophie Thatcher’s exceptional skill shines in every facet of her work, making her one of the most captivating talents of her generation. Her versatility across different genres is evident, from her outstanding performances in the series “Yellowjackets” to her impressive roles in films like “The Boogeyman” and “Heretic”. However, this role presents unique challenges, and Thatcher handles it masterfully. Intriguingly, her character undergoes a major transformation throughout the narrative as she uncovers surprising truths, and it’s mesmerizing to observe Thatcher portray that metamorphosis. If you’re not already a fan of hers before watching “Companion”, you’ll undoubtedly become one by the end.
In the film, Thatcher shines brighter than anyone else, making it hard to imagine the movie without her. However, she doesn’t shoulder the entire production alone; she has an outstanding cast supporting her. As for Jack Quaid, he continues to impress with his performance in this film, striking a balance between humor and intensity that endears him to audiences but also leaves us wondering about the deeper intentions of his character. This role builds upon the charm he displayed in The Boys and Scream.
Later on, Megan Suri’s character Kat emits a subtly ominous aura, displaying a secretively antagonistic demeanor toward Iris from the beginning. Harvey Guillén, on the other hand, brings his unique blend of sweetness that eventually gives way to shadows. In addition, Lukas Gage’s performance is commendable, as he masterfully navigates some of the story’s most shocking twists without giving too much away.
In an attempt to both appraise and suggest Companion, I’ve made sure not to reveal any spoilers. However, if you’ve seen some promotional materials for the movie, you should be aware that it’s not a film with just one twist. There are still many unexpected moments waiting for you inside. This is yet another thrilling contribution to the ongoing resurgence of original horror films and a delightful spectacle for the beginning of 2025.
