I’m deeply saddened to share that Bernadette O’Brien, a talented costume designer, wardrobe supervisor, and Emmy-nominated costumer who brought life to TV shows like ‘Murder, She Wrote’ and ‘MacGyver’, and movies such as ‘For the Boys’ starring Bette Midler, has passed away at the age of 90.
On Monday, O’Brien passed away peacefully in her sleep at an assisted living home in Spokane, Washington. Her grandson, Robinson O’Brien-Bours, confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter.
O’Brien was responsible for designing costumes for a variety of films such as Vice Squad (1982), House (1985), Mobsters (1991), Another Stakeout (1993) and Cries of Silence (1996). He also worked on the TV series T.J. Hooker and Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction, as well as the 2000 television movie American Tragedy.
In the year 1992, she was nominated for an Emmy Award (alongside Thomas Welsh), recognizing their contributions to a King Arthur-inspired episode of the TV series “MacGyver” on ABC.
Helen Bernadette Brady, born in Dublin on March 29, 1934, moved to the U.S. with her husband, Jack, in 1955 and established their home in Cleveland. With a knack for sewing since childhood, she pursued costuming roles in local theaters, instructed costume design at a nearby university, and collaborated with the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival in the town.
In 1977, she relocated to Los Angeles with the ambition of launching her career in costume design and wardrobe styling. Over time, she earned memberships in both the Television Academy and the Costume Designers Branch of the Motion Picture Academy.
During a filming trip for “The Love She Sought” alongside Angela Lansbury, O’Brien made the decision to buy a home in her native country. She purchased land in Boolavogue, a village reminiscent of where she spent holidays during World War II, and established a lavender farm there. The locals affectionately called her the Lavender Lady as she ran her business from this picturesque farm.
Each summer found O’Brien in Ireland, dividing her time between her rural farm and her residence in the Bungalow Heaven district of Pasadena.
Every year, her St. Patrick’s Day gatherings would attract hundreds of attendees who delighted in tasting her corned beef and scones, all while being serenaded by classic Irish tunes.
She leaves behind her daughters Valerie, Patricia, and Kathleen; grandchildren Jennifer, Caitlin, Robinson, Elinor, Liam, Hannah, Mairead, Daisy, Declan, and Connor; as well as nine great-grandchildren. Her son, the musician and composer John O’Brien, passed away in 2011.
The individuals who will continue her legacy are her daughters Valerie, Patricia, and Kathleen; her grandkids Jennifer, Caitlin, Robinson, Elinor, Liam, Hannah, Mairead, Daisy, Declan, and Connor; and nine great-grandchildren. Sadly, her son, a musician and composer named John O’Brien, is no longer with us as he passed away in 2011.
