A variety of captivating TV shows revolve around diverse themes such as friendships (Friends), personal interests (Seinfeld), politics (Veep), media (30 Rock), technology (Silicon Valley), science (The Big Bang Theory), and so on. In the upcoming year, a fresh series called Motorheads is set to premiere on Prime Video, featuring an eclectic group of characters who share a passion for cars. If you’re a car enthusiast or looking for a unique new show, Motorheads might just be your next favorite clique! The cast includes Ryan Phillippe (Crash, Cruel Intentions), along with Nathalie Kelley, Michael Cimino, Melissa Collazo, and others.
I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Neil Burger, the director behind the pilot and second episode of our upcoming series, while he was busy promoting his latest film, “Inheritance”. When asked about our show, “Motorheads”, he shared some exciting insights. In his own words, he described it as a blend between “The Fast and the Furious” and “Friday Night Lights”. Set in a town in Pennsylvania that’s seen better days, the focus is not on football but on cars, racing, car theft, and customizing cars – essentially car culture. The writing, he mentioned, is particularly impressive, thanks to creator John A. Norris.
Burger continued:
One of the best aspects of it is its youthful cast. It’s amazing to see these individuals, barely out of their teenage years, who could easily be mistaken for established actors like Dustin Hoffman or Tom Cruise. Remarkably, there are some truly talented performers in there, and despite their young age, they’ve already achieved so much.
Neil Burger on the “Methology” of ‘Inheritance’
Apart from working on Burger’s other popular TV production, The Agency on Paramount+, he has also been occupied. This series, featuring an impressive cast led by Michael Fassbender, earned a Season 2 renewal even before its premiere due to the cast’s commitment in their high-end espionage drama. Burger humorously pointed out that he finished the season finale of The Agency, which will be released on the 24th, marking the same day as the release of another one of his directorial works, Inheritance. In essence, two spy-themed projects from Burger will debut on a single day.
Under the theme of Inheritance, movie enthusiasts can’t wait to tag along with lead actress Phoebe Dynevor, known for her role in Bridgerton, as she transforms into a trainee spy in an action-packed thriller. This movie was filmed entirely using iPhones by the experienced director who shared his unconventional, secretive filming techniques for this upcoming espionage flick with us.
In a non-traditional approach, we sneaked past customs capturing candid moments, keeping Phoebe in character the whole time. This shooting style was unlike a standard production, eschewing common shots like wide shots, over-the-shoulder shots, and close-ups. Instead, we opted for seamless, flowing shots that didn’t draw attention and required minimal adjustments.
According to Burger, the new approach taken in making the movie gave it a raw, spontaneous or even improvised vibe. However, this method also impacted the actors’ performances significantly. They were required to stay in character at all times since anything could happen unexpectedly on set. From IFC Films, the film Inheritance will hit theaters on Friday, January 24, 2025.
