In the recently released horror film “Presence,” directed by Steven Soderbergh and co-written with David Koepp (known for “Jurassic World: Rebirth”), Julia Fox portrays a real estate lawyer who unknowingly sells a home with a malevolent spirit attached. However, the actress claims that not only do ghosts exist, but she peacefully cohabits with one in her own life.
During an interview on Late Night with Seth Myers (as reported by Entertainment Weekly), Fox shared that she didn’t realize her home was haunted when she first bought it. She explained, “It started just like any ghost story. I felt a strange attraction to this house, and it happened to be under a full moon, and then I thought to myself, ‘This is the one. I have to buy the house…’
Fox shared that upon settling into their new home with her 4-year-old son, they found a note in the basement from the former owners. The note, titled “Beauty,” contained various personal items like a hairbrush and a mirror, suggesting it belonged to the previous owner.
In contrast to the typical scary haunted house movies such as “Presence,” “Poltergeist,” and “The Conjuring,” the ghost in this case is not hostile, it is actually friendly.
She is truly remarkable. In many ways, she resembles a loving matron of the household, taking care of us and earning our affection. Interestingly, my son claims to have seen her, although I have not. He often says, ‘I’ve seen her, I’ve seen her.’
The movie titled “Presence,” hailing from studio NEON, features an impressive cast including Lucy Liu, Callina Liang, Chris Sullivan, and Eddy Maday. At the moment, it boasts a 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising it as a “deliberate supernatural chiller” that showcases Steven Soderbergh’s ability to manipulate film structure just as effortlessly as he traverses various genres.
The film is set to hit theaters on Jan. 24, 2025.
Fox Isn’t Alone in Her Belief of Ghosts
Apart from Fox, other cast members of Presence, a series inspired by the reality TV show Celebrity Ghost Stories, have also reported paranormal encounters. For instance, Liang, the actress portraying Chloe in the movie, shared with Vogue her own experience with a ghost that haunted her dorm room during her time at drama school in New York.
The dormitory where I resided had once been a retirement home transformed into student accommodation. While it wasn’t exactly haunted, there was undeniably an eerie presence. I would often find myself waking up from naps to discover strange markings on the walls, or my phone mysteriously unplugged from its charger…things of that nature. Initially, I was quite frightened, but I eventually figured out how to share the space with this entity, which was intriguing because Chloe, unlike the other characters in the movie, didn’t seem bothered by it.
In the same interview, Liu also weighed in with her thoughts on the supernatural, saying,
As a fervent believer in the concept, I find myself viewing life from a unique perspective. We, each one of us, are spiritual entities temporarily residing in these physical forms. When our bodies can no longer contain us, we don’t cease to exist; instead, we seek a new dwelling place.
At times, much like the characters in ‘Presence‘, we may find ourselves without a permanent home or reluctant to depart, choosing instead to linger. This is often what people sense when they enter a space that they describe as ‘haunted’, but it’s actually the lingering essence of souls such as ours.
