Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal have confirmed what seems to be a much-anticipated reunion from the legendary romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally…” (1989). The pair shared a fresh photo of their characters recreating the final scene where Harry Burns (Crystal) and Sally Albright (Ryan) discuss their love story from the couch, mirroring countless other couples in married life as depicted in this classic film. Ryan and Crystal unveiled the news on Instagram, with the post reading: “After all these years, we’re still just friends… or are we?
It’s finally happening, we’re reuniting for something iconic. Can’t wait to show you all soon.
Ryan and Crystal didn’t provide details on how they plan to reconnect, but there are several potential scenarios if a movie sequel isn’t the solution. For instance, When Harry Met Sally… might follow the Cobra Kai model by featuring Burns, Albright, and their offspring on a streaming platform. Alternatively, the actors themselves could share the stage at the 97th Oscars this coming March, much like Danny DeVito, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Michael Keaton did with their amusing Batman skit during the 2024 Academy Awards ceremony.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m eagerly speculating that Harry and Sally might rekindle their connection in a massive TV advertisement, possibly during Super Bowl LIX on February 9th. Whether it’s through a movie sequel or a heartwarming commercial, it’s been over three and a half decades since Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal first brought these unforgettable characters to life. In the original film, they found their happily ever after, but as Sally humorously noted, it took them “12 years and three months” to get there!
Harry and Sally Almost Didn’t Get Their Happily Ever After
In a twist that might have left fans disheartened, the original conclusion of the beloved romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally…” (1989) would not have shown Harry Burns (Crystal) and Sally Albright (Ryan) reconciling at the New Year’s Eve party. Instead, their friendship might have ended on a sour note, mirroring director Rob Reiner’s personal experiences as a single man, as he revealed in an interview with Chris Wallace (per CNN).
The initial conclusion of the movie we planned was that Harry and Sally wouldn’t end up together because I had been married for a decade. For a decade, I was single, struggling to understand how I could ever be with someone again. This idea eventually became When Harry Met Sally…, as at that time, I hadn’t met anyone new.
After a long time, they would reunite, chat, and eventually part ways – that’s how it was going to be for them. I encountered my wife, Michele, whom I’ve been married to for 35 years. Our paths crossed during the filmmaking process, and I altered the ending of the project.
The romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally…” directed by Rob Reiner is still considered one of the best of its kind, and you can currently watch it on popular Video On Demand platforms. Alongside Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, the film also stars Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby as Harry and Sally’s closest friends. Additionally, Steven Ford, son of former U.S. President Gerald Ford, makes a brief appearance in the movie as Sally’s college boyfriend, Joe.
