Timothée Chalamet Follows James Dean as Youngest Two-Time Oscar Best Actor Nominee

On a Thursday post on his Bluesky platform, film historian Mark Harris pointed out that Timothée Chalamet was the first actor to receive two Best Actor nominations from the Academy prior to reaching thirty years of age. However, he achieved this feat by emulating James Dean’s path.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but reflect on the tragic life of James Dean, whose brilliance was cut short at just 24, following a fatal car crash in 1955. Remarkably, that same year, he earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the young hero in Elia Kazan’s film adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel, “East of Eden.” His talent was recognized once more posthumously in 1956 for his role in the movie “Giant.” Tragically, while driving his Porsche Spyder on a California highway, he met an untimely end in a head-on collision.

Dean passed away a month prior to the premiere of his most iconic movie, “Rebel Without a Cause,” in which he portrayed the troubled suburban teen character Jim, as directed by Nicholas Ray, a role that became synonymous with an era.

29-year-old Timothée Chalamet played a young Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s musical biopic, “A Complete Unknown.” This role earned him his second Oscar nomination for best actor. His first Oscar nomination was for his performance in the 2018 drama, “Call Me by Your Name.

At the tender age of 22, Timothée Chalamet received an Oscar nomination for his performance in Luca Guadagnino’s coming-of-age drama, a feat that had not been achieved by someone so young in the best actor category for over 80 years. Interestingly, the youngest ever best actor nominee was Jackie Cooper, who was only nine when he received his nod for his role in “Skippy” back in 1931.

Mickey Rooney was just 19 years old when he received a nomination for “Babes in Arms” in 1940, much like Timothée Chalamet who has been nominated multiple times for Best Actor at the Academy Awards since the 1990s.
