Hugh Grant Calls for Criminal Investigation of Murdoch Tabloids Over Hacking, Says Prince Harry’s Settlement Doesn’t Get to “Real Truth”

Hugh Grant has called for U.K. authorities to launch a fresh criminal probe into Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers (NGN), asserting that there is still much work to be done in this matter following Prince Harry’s groundbreaking settlement, as he emphasized that the job is far from over.

On Wednesday, the Duke of Sussex found himself in urgent talks prior to the commencement of his court case against the publishers of The Sun tabloid. He initiated the lawsuit, asserting that his privacy had been breached due to alleged phone hacking and illegal data collection performed by journalists and private investigators affiliated with The Sun and the defunct News of the World between 1996 and 2011. In response, NGN extended a “full and unreserved apology” to the Duke.

Actor Grant, who recently received a nomination for Best Actor at the BAFTAs for his work in “Heretic,” resolved a privacy lawsuit against NGN last year. He suggested that he could have been liable for a staggering £10 million ($12.4m) had he won, despite the allegations. Grant claimed that The Sun employed private investigators to illegally tap his phone and burglarize his home.

Currently, Grant is once again urging for additional steps to be taken, asserting on BBC Radio 4’s Today program last Friday that their settlements revealed a civil lawsuit was not suitable for uncovering the “true facts” regarding the newspaper incident. He further stated that News Group Newspapers (NGN) had manipulated the civil court system to muffle victims’ voices, and now believes a criminal case is essential.

For the past decade, as the actor explained, they’ve been consistently carrying out this action. They’ve invested approximately £1bn to ensure these matters remain beyond the purview of court proceedings… and consequently, you don’t get legitimate judicial rulings. I believe their primary fear is that such rulings might initiate a fresh criminal investigation.

As a dedicated gamer, I’d put it this way: “Even now, folks who worked at The Sun during the alleged incidents hold significant influence. It seems like a criminal investigation is necessary.

He commented: “Many soldiers from those newspapers have now joined our cause, expressing their disapproval by saying this is abhorrent. We’ve suffered – imprisonment, fines, job loss – yet those giving the orders remain unscathed.

He urged the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Metropolitan Police to conduct a more thorough investigation.
