Warning: Spoilers for Flight Risk.
Under the guidance of director Mel Gibson, the edge-of-your-seat thriller titled Flight Risk has recently graced theater screens. Despite appearing to disclose the entire plot through its trailer, it skillfully conceals certain elements. The bulk of the movie unfolds within a rickety aircraft, where U.S. Deputy Marshal Madelyn Harris (played by Michelle Dockery) is tasked with transporting a government witness, Winston (Topher Grace), to civilization. Having eluded authorities in Alaska after embezzling millions for a mob boss and keeping some of the funds for himself, Madelyn manages to find Winston at an isolated motel. As they seek transportation back to Anchorage, they rent a private plane. However, unbeknownst to them, their pilot, Daryl Boot (Mark Wahlberg), is a hired assassin with orders to eliminate Winston.
Following a seamless takeoff, it doesn’t take long for Daryl to unmask himself as an assassin. He murdered the true pilot, adopted the man’s persona, and seized control of the aircraft. He came close to killing Madelyn before she managed to subdue him with a stun gun and handcuff him to the rear of the plane. For now, neither Winston nor Madelyn possess flying skills, creating a fresh batch of troubles. Fortunately, Madelyn carries a satellite phone, but as she initiates contacting her superiors for aid, she discovers that someone within the U.S. Marshals disclosed Winston’s travel details. Consequently, even if they successfully land the plane, his life remains at risk.
Does Madelyn Manage to Safely Land the Plane?
How Does Daryl Upend Her Efforts?
Due to her satellite phone, Madelyn manages to reach Van Sant (Leah Remini), who arranges for her to talk to a pilot named Hasan (Maaz Ali/Monib Abhat). Under his guidance, she navigates the plane effectively, eventually landing it safely without any explosion. However, the trip from one location to another was far from straightforward; in reality, it was an extremely challenging task.
Following the revelation of Daryl’s true identity, Madelyn skillfully confines him in the aircraft’s rear. However, he persists in provoking both Madelyn and Winston, attempting to instigate them and somehow escape his restraints. After hitting a nerve, Madelyn becomes enraged and challenges him. Since Daryl mentioned her past work history where a witness was killed under her watch, a fact not widely known, she vented her frustration on him physically. In response, he manages to grab her sunglasses and utilizes the arms of them to rip apart his restraint and escape.
right under Madelyn’s watchful eye, there was an unexpected attack when Daryl burst out from behind and stabbed Winston twice, then choked him with a strap. This shocking event took everyone by surprise. Fortunately, Winston managed to pull the knife from his chest and cut the strap free, thus saving Madelyn from harm. Once more, Madelyn was able to subdue Daryl, but this time she handcuffed him to a stronger metal component of the plane. Unfortunately, this didn’t stop Daryl at all. It was evident that he was a psychotic individual as he managed to break his own thumb in order to remove one of the handcuffs. This gruesome act served as a stark reminder of just how mentally unstable he truly was.
As Madelyn was bringing the plane down, Daryl made one final assault on her. She defended herself by firing several shots at him and continued with her landing procedure. Eventually, she managed to land the damaged plane, but it disintegrated as it moved along the runway.
Tragically, the force of the impact threw Daryl from the plane, causing him to be run over by one of the emergency vehicles that arrived on the scene, resulting in his swift demise.
Remarkably, both Madelyn and Winston survived the crash landing. Winston was then hurriedly taken to an ambulance for immediate medical attention. However, their survival didn’t ensure a smooth sailing ahead as they still faced potential complications from the traumatic event.
Who Inside the U.S. Marshals Leaked Winston’s Info?
How Are They Finally Discovered?
Upon discovering there had to be a leak somehow, as Winston’s travel plans were private, Madelyn deduces that the source of the leak was someone within the U.S. Marshals, given Daryl’s mention of her previous role. Initially, she suspects her superior, Van Sant, but then contacts Director Coleridge (Paul Ben-Victor) of the U.S. Marshals to share her concerns.
It was Director Coleridge who turned out to be the deceiver, as it was revealed that one of the men Winston had been sending funds to for the mob was none other than Coleridge himself. This connection became clear when Madelyn recognized that the IP address traced back to the payoff matched the city where Coleridge resided. Unfortunately, by the time all pieces of the puzzle were put together, it was already too late. To hide his actions, Coleridge orchestrated Van Sant’s death in a car accident shortly after speaking with Madelyn.
In addition, upon landing the plane, Coleridge attempts to choke Winston inside the ambulance using another assassin. Fortunately, Madelyn notices what’s happening just in time and eliminates Coleridge’s henchman before he could carry out his plan over the phone. At last, everything appears to be under control, although it seems Madelyn won’t leave Winston until Coleridge is completely out of the picture. With everyone now safely off the plane and no immediate dangers looming for either party, the movie’s credits finally begin to roll. Flight Risk can be seen in theaters now.
