Christopher Nolan is renowned for crafting grandiose films, and his next project aligns perfectly with this reputation. While details about Nolan’s upcoming movie for Universal Pictures began to surface last October, with Matt Damon reprising his role from Oppenheimer, it wasn’t until December that we discovered this would be a film adaptation of The Odyssey. Whether you’re an enthusiast of literature eagerly anticipating Homer’s epic poem being brought to life on the silver screen or simply a fan of Nolan’s movies, there’s bound to be a lot of excitement surrounding this movie. Now, we have a confirmed, non-casting detail for The Odyssey, and it seems goats will play a part in the story.
Reports indicate that Christopher Nolan is set to commence filming for The Odyssey on the island of Favignana, Sicily, within about two months. In ancient times, Favignana was known as Aegusa, or Goat Island. It’s said that additional scenes might be shot on the Eolian islands in the same region, but the main part of the Sicilian shoot will primarily occur on Favignana. Filming will also take place in the United Kingdom and Morocco.

When Tenet hit the big screen, there was quite a buzz, but little did they know that John David Washington’s casting was about to rock the film industry! From my perspective as a cinema enthusiast, I can confidently say that Christopher Nolan shaking things up by bringing Washington onboard was nothing short of revolutionary.
I recently watched Interstellar for the first time, and I’m thrilled that I waited until I had kids before seeing it with Christopher Nolan’s direction.
After finally catching up on Interstellar, a movie by Christopher Nolan, I can say it was worth the wait until I became a parent.
Both versions convey the idea that you enjoyed watching Interstellar more after becoming a parent and waited to see it until that point in your life.
Favignana is unique because many scholars think this is where, according to Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew may have set foot with their livestock for a barbecue. While any number of islands could fit the description provided in the text, Christopher Nolan chose Favignana, the very location where Homer placed his character over 2,800 years ago, to shoot some scenes. This level of dedication to historical authenticity from a filmmaker is something I truly appreciate.
Similar to its original tale, Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey will follow the story of Odysseus who spent 10 years traveling back home after participating in the Trojan War for an equal duration. Accompanying him on his voyage are crewmates who perish and face perils such as The Cyclops and the Sirens. In contrast, at home, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus endure the presence of a group of suitors trying to win Penelope’s hand in marriage under the belief that Odysseus is deceased.
To date, Matt Damon is joined by Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal in the cast of “The Odyssey”. The roles each actor will portray have yet to be revealed. According to Variety’s report, Christopher Nolan plans to film “The Odyssey” using cutting-edge IMAX technology. As we approach the start of principal photography, it’s exciting to speculate about who these actors might be playing and which additional stars may join them.
In theaters starting July 17, 2026, is where you’ll find “The Odyssey”. On the other hand, if you can’t wait that long, stream “Oppenheimer”, the latest film by Christopher Nolan, on Peacock right now.
