What the F*ck is a Movie Now?

The validity of movies, TV shows, and other content being released directly to streaming platforms is a topic generating intense discussion among film enthusiasts online, and recently, renowned director Quentin Tarantino shared his perspective on the matter. As it turns out, he’s not exactly enamored with this trend. It’s worth mentioning that Tarantino has extensive knowledge of Hollywood’s evolving terrain, having emerged during the ascent of independent directors in the early ’90s and maintaining relevance even as major studio systems gained traction with their blockbuster franchises in later years. The latest transformation in the industry is the dominance of streaming services, which has even attracted esteemed filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Steve McQueen to direct movies for these platforms. However, Tarantino seems to be firmly against this development.

At the Sundance Film Festival, as reported by Variety, Quentin Tarantino shared his thoughts during a Q&A session. Known for iconic films like Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Django Unchained, and Inglourious Basterds, to name a few, he expressed some strong opinions on the current state of the movie industry. Essentially, he questioned what a movie has become nowadays, as encapsulated by his initial statement: “What’s a movie these days?” The full details of his thoughts can be found below in his extended response.

I must admit, I don’t understand what a movie is these days. It seems like they only play for a brief time in theaters before being shown on television just a week or two later. Frankly, I never entered this world to receive diminishing returns. Back then, in ’97 and even as recent as 2019, it was already a tough situation. But now, with things getting significantly worse, it’s become more of a show-pony exercise. Nowadays, a film is released in theaters, but within two weeks, you can stream it on various platforms.

What’s Going On With Quentin Tarantino’s Final Movie?

It seems that Tarantino’s critical views on today’s cinematic experience could be the reason behind his shift in focus from filmmaking to an older form of storytelling, such as plays. During the panel discussion, Tarantino disclosed that he is extending his break from directing his 11th and last movie, leaving much speculation, and instead dedicating his time to a new stage play project.

Quentin Tarantino shared that he’s currently working on a play, hinting at it being his next project. He didn’t disclose any details about the storyline yet, as the play is still in its early stages of development. However, with a new tale from Tarantino and potential clues to his upcoming, final film, fans are likely to rush to see this play.

The director added, “If it turns out to be a disaster, I likely won’t make a film out of it. However, if it’s hugely successful, it could potentially be my final production.
