After earning the title of “The Karate Kid” a few years prior and before appearing in “My Cousin Vinny”, Ralph Macchio took on a captivating role in a film titled “Crossroads”. In this movie, he portrayed an ambitious Blues guitarist navigating the Deep South in pursuit of a legendary crossroads where he could challenge the Devil with his guitar skills. Despite its intriguing plot, it may sound less appealing on paper; however, the execution was impressive due to “Crossroads” being directed by the esteemed Walter Hill (known for films like “48 Hrs” and “Last Man Standing”) and boasting a talented ensemble cast supporting Macchio. As I watched the stunning trailer for Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated vampire movie, “Sinners”, I found myself reminiscing about Macchio’s film, and when speaking with the director, his other inspirations left me in awe.
Here’s the Sinners trailer, which you need to watch, immediately:
Undeniably, Ryan Coogler’s latest film, featuring Michael B. Jordan of Creed and Black Panther fame, weaves music and sin together in a captivating manner. As audiences prepare for the movie’s release on April 18, titled Sinners, they may find their thoughts drifting towards previous collaborations between these talented individuals. However, during an engaging chat with Coogler, who often referred to Sinners as “genre fluid,” he revealed the movies that inspired his work on this project, and horror enthusiasts – along with cinephiles – will be left spellbound.
Talking about his influences on this film, Coogler told us:
This work exhibits a significant amount of influence from the Coen Brothers, particularly noticeable in elements similar to “Inside Llewyn Davis,” “O’ Brother Where Art Thou?”, and “Fargo.” Additionally, there are distinct traces of “No Country for Old Men.” Robert Rodriguez’s style is also prominent. It could easily be compared to “From Dusk ’til Dawn,” but it shares more characteristics with “The Faculty,” a remake of “The Thing,” which happens to be one of my favorite movies and a personal favorite horror film. Therefore, the film carries a strong influence from Carpenter as well.
Hey there, Ryan Coogler! I’m already thrilled about the Prohibition era setting with a muscular Michael B. Jordan wielding Tommy guns in your upcoming horror film. There’s no need to pile on so many exciting elements; it’s already shaping up to be quite the spectacle.

However, Ryan Coogler unexpectedly intensified the discussion by referencing one of my beloved Stephen King novels as an inspiration. He shared with us:
As a devoted cinephile, I must confess that some of the most profound influences on films aren’t strictly from cinema itself. For instance, the chilling tale of Salem’s Lot has left an indelible mark on numerous movies, making it a significant influence.
Beyond just possessing tickets, sir, I’m actually already settled in the auditorium, eagerly waiting for the show to start! The movie “Sinners” premieres on April 18, and let me tell you, there are plenty of reasons to join us. For instance, Hailee Steinfeld is portraying a vampire, which should be quite intriguing. Add to that an original score by Ludwig Goransson, the same IMAX cameras used by Christopher Nolan in Ryan Coogler’s hands, and you’ve got yourself a truly unique experience!
