One mature action you can take is squarely addressing your setbacks, and that is exactly what Lady Gaga is doing regarding “Joker: Folie à Deux”. After recently announcing a new album, the performer/actress is opening up about the shortcomings of the “Joker” sequel and offers a rational explanation for why the film didn’t resonate with some viewers.
In a conversation with Elle Magazine, Lady Gaga offered her initial thoughts about the film “Joker: Folie à Deux ” and its less favorable reception at the box office and among critics. Understanding the situation, she provided the most graceful response possible by stating, “‘Sometimes people just don’t care for certain things, and that’s okay. I believe it takes courage to be an artist, and that means being prepared for people not always liking what you create. You keep going, even if something doesn’t resonate as intended.’
Regardless of her impressive achievements in music, television, and cinema, Gaga has experienced some projects falling short, yet her dedicated global fanbase often ensures her success. On the silver screen, she made ‘A Star is Born’ a contender for Best Actress at the Oscars, won an Oscar for Best Original Song, and had a profitable box office run. Thanks to her international popularity, ‘House of Gucci’ became a hit worldwide, and she was also a significant figure during awards season for the film, although she missed out on an Oscar nomination. Despite her high profile, Gaga is not unfamiliar with the dread of failure, and she openly admits how detrimental it can be to succumb to that fear.
When it enters your existence, it might prove challenging to manage. It often contributes to the chaos.
‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Didn’t Connect With Critics or Audiences
As a passionate cinephile, I found myself following the trajectory of “Joker: Folie à Deux” with bated breath when it made its debut at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. The reviews emerging from this grand occasion were a mixed bag, and the situation only worsened as more critics weighed in. The movie currently boasts a 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, accompanied by an equally dismal 31% audience score. As the negative reviews started pouring in, apprehension surrounding this “Joker” sequel intensified, especially considering its unique musical format.
The movie, estimated to have cost $200 million (not including marketing expenses), earned just $207.5 million worldwide in total. In comparison, 2019’s Joker, budgeted at $60 million, raked in over $1 billion globally. Consequently, Warner Bros. suffered a substantial financial loss with this film, despite initial speculations that it might replicate the Oscar success of its precursor. However, the sequel garnered seven Razzie nominations, including Worst Picture, Worst Director (Todd Phillips), and acting nods for Joaquin Phoenix (Worst Actor) and Lady Gaga (Worst Actress). It’s worth mentioning that the increased negative attention from the Razzies might be a response to the film’s perceived flaws while it’s still struggling, but the performances of Phoenix and Gaga are generally not criticized in this context.
Although the movie predominantly received unfavorable reviews, it garnered a notable supporter in filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, who lauded the production and its defiant gesture towards fan expectations. To top it off, he responded to the criticism of his praise with his signature Tarantino style. If a film is going to have at least one advocate, it’s certainly Tarantino. Ultimately, Gaga and her team will weather the storm, and in no time, they’ll release something that will have audiences raving about it.
