Sony Music Publishing Names Katie Welle President and Head of U.S. A&R

As a gamer, I’m excited to share that I’ve been given a new role! Sony Music Publishing has just appointed me as President and Head of U.S. A&R. It’s a dream come true, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us in the music industry.

In her fresh position, Welle will head the creative team at SMP with the aim of attracting high-caliber individuals and broadening the scope for songwriters worldwide, as stated in a press release. Beginning February 1st, Welle will assume the role previously held by Walter Jones, who is departing from SMP.

Previously holding the position as Senior Vice President of Creative at the publishing company, Katie is now set to report directly to Jon Platt, the chairman and CEO of SMP. In a recent statement, Platt praised Katie’s ability to spot and cultivate talent, stating that since her return to SMP five years ago, she has made substantial impacts on our A&R strategy, playing a crucial part in the rise of many remarkable songwriters.

Initially, Welle worked his way up from an A&R assistant at Epic Records to becoming the VP of creative at SMP and the SVP of A&R at RCA. Later, he returned to Sony in 2020 after holding these significant positions.

It’s a tremendous privilege to assume this position at Sony Music Publishing as I deeply resonate with the high standards we uphold to benefit our songwriters,” Welle expressed in a statement. “I am profoundly grateful for Jon Platt’s guidance and backing, as well as our exceptional A&R team and the brilliant community of songwriters who constantly inspire us.

The recently appointed president and chief executive officer of U.S. A&R has cultivated enduring creative partnerships with artists like Tyler, the Creator, Clams Casino, Mikky Ekko, in addition to significantly influencing the trajectory of Charlie Handsome’s career and that of the Grammy-winning Songwriter of the Year, Theron Thomas.

Welle is set to work from our Los Angeles headquarters, which goes by the nickname “Disneyland for songwriters,” nestled within the Sycamore media district in Hollywood.
