Anthony Mackie Clarifies His Viral Captain America Comment: “I’m a Proud American”

Anthony Mackie, who plays Captain America, has provided further explanation to address misunderstandings some online users had regarding his previous comments about the character’s values.

Mackie made it clear in his Instagram post on Tuesday, he feels immense pride as an American and considers it a privilege beyond measure to embody a hero like Captain America. He holds those who safeguard our nation in the highest regard. Everyone, regardless of where they come from, can identify with Captain America’s timeless qualities.

The statement comes after earlier comments trended online on Monday and Tuesday.

In an interview at a promotional event for ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ in Rome, Mackie expressed that Captain America symbolizes various concepts to him, and he feels it’s not appropriate for ‘America’ to be among those symbols,” (Mackie said while onstage in Rome to promote Disney’s upcoming Captain America: Brave New World. The one-minute clip of the interview was filmed and posted by several attendees online.)

Mackie went on to describe a person who always stays true to their promises, upholds respectability, and embodies honesty and moral principles. In other words, this individual is reliable, steadfast, and deserving of trust.

The original sentence about the superhero not exclusively representing America was left out in this edited version.

The upcoming movie “Brave New World” marks the debut of Anthony Mackie as Captain America, following Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers handing over the role at the conclusion of “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. Prior to this film, Mackie starred in his Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” which aired in 2021, and delved into the complex ideas surrounding what it signifies for a Black man to inherit the title of Captain America.

In an interview this week, Mackie expressed, “It’s equally crucial for Black children as well as white ones to witness a Black Captain America. Growing up, my preferred superhero was green, and it wasn’t because of race; instead, it was because he embodied goodness and righteousness.

Mackie expressed during the earlier discussed interview that the upcoming movie, scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day, is a “dream realized.
