Jil Sander’s New Fragrance Line Is Just as Sleek as Its Clothes

Jil Sander is venturing into the perfume industry. Renowned for its subtle elegance and distinctive “less is more” fashion philosophy, the label has unveiled the initial collection of its high-end fragrance line.

In partnership with cosmetics giant Coty, Jil Sander has launched a unisex fragrance line as part of their brand expansion into lifestyle products and an attempt to connect with consumers worldwide, particularly in key beauty markets such as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), where they plan to open a new store in Dubai next month.

The first collection offers six unique scents, carefully crafted with primary natural components accented by aldehydes. As stated by the brand, their innovative strategy aimed to redefine conventional ratios and construct unconventional arrangements, focusing solely on the core elements: the fragrance, enhanced with three essential natural ingredients, the synthetic components of aldehydes, alcohol derived from repurposed carbon emissions, and water. This is how the creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier approach perfume creation.

Significantly, each fragrance was developed in partnership with several olfactory professionals. For instance, Julie Massé, a perfumer based in Tokyo, contributed to the creation of “Jil Sander Leaf,” a blend of key lime, cardamom, and corn mint; whereas Mathilde Bijaoui, a scent artist from Paris, was responsible for “Jil Sander Miel,” a combination of cedarwood, vetiver, and jasmine grandiflorum. Later on, Jil Sander introduced other scents like “Black Tea,” “Earth,” “Coffea,” and “Smoke.

Jil Sander’s perfume bottles are crafted subtly, with input from the Milan and Rotterdam-based design studio Formafantasma. The designers’ prolonged exploration results in each packaging piece featuring a unique, organic, asymmetrical shape and an innovative glass arrangement.
