CAPE and TAAF Launch Rising Filmmakers Finishing Fund for Asian and Pacific Islander Directors

Two nonprofits are teaming up to help fledgling filmmakers finish their films.

This week, the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE) and The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) unveiled a new initiative called the Rising Filmmakers Finishing Fund. This fund offers two aspiring filmmakers of Asian, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander descent post-production grants worth $50,000 each for their second to fifth feature films. The lucky recipients will also gain valuable networking opportunities within the circles of CAPE and TAAF.

Contestants should provide a live-action feature film narrative that is nearly complete or post-production, with at least 90% of principal photography already done. This project should align with CAPE’s goal of promoting diversity by supporting, linking, and strengthening Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander artists and industry professionals in the entertainment and media sector.

Michelle K. Sugihara, CAPE’s executive director, pointed out that many gifted independent filmmakers make a powerful entrance with their debut work, but struggle for years or even decades to finish subsequent films. A deeper analysis of the data shows that women and people of color are far less likely to advance in this way. The Finishing Fund, designed to assist Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander filmmakers, aims to help them climb higher in their careers by ensuring their subsequent projects reach the big screen more smoothly.

Dr. Masum Momaya, TAAF’s director of narrative change, stated that our goal is to provide the necessary support for creatives and storytellers to succeed throughout their careers. This is achieved through the Rising Filmmakers Finishing Fund, which bridges career development gaps. We are excited to collaborate with CAPE, a strong advocate for AANHPI creators, to make sure filmmakers have the tools and backing to manifest their stories. On-screen and behind-the-scenes representation of AANHPIs is crucial in promoting safety, inclusion, and acceptance within American society.

Submissions are open now through March 31 on Coverfly.
