Chris Evans Denies Returning to MCU for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’: I’m “Happily Retired”

It seems like Chris Evans won’t be part of “Avengers: Doomsday”, as he’s indicated himself.

Despite The Hollywood Reporter confirming in December that Chris Evans was returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor has since denied these claims.

Just the other day, they asked me about this in Esquire magazine, during their cover feature on Anthony Mackie. But

Chris Evans significantly established himself as a pillar in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through his portrayal of Steve Rogers/Captain America. He initially brought the superhero to life in the 2011 film “Captain America: The First Avenger,” and, after appearing in multiple movies, he bid farewell to his character following “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. Evans’ character shared a close friendship with Sam Wilson/Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie, who now holds Captain America’s shield. The new film featuring this development, titled “Captain America: Brave New World,” is set to release on February 14.

Mackie, who’s additionally cast in “Avengers: Doomsday,” was similarly questioned by Esquire about the possibility of Evans rejoining Marvel.

He acknowledged that he wasn’t aware of it earlier. He had spoken to Chris a few weeks ago and at that time, it didn’t seem to be under discussion. In fact, Chris hadn’t mentioned it, as I inquired about it myself. I remember asking him, ‘By the way, they mentioned everyone is returning for the movie. Are you planning on joining too?’ To which he replied, ‘I’m quite content with my retirement.’

The actor from the movie “Twisted Metal” went on to say, “That’s where I picked it up. My manager informed me about it. He said something like, ‘It seems Chris is returning.’ That’s all I’ve been told. I haven’t received a script yet.

It’s not unprecedented that an actor might deny, only to later make a spectacular comeback as a superhero… cough, cough, Andrew Garfield. For quite some time, he denied reprising his role as Spider-Man, but in 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” he left audiences stunned with his unexpected return.

The film titled “Avengers: Doomsday” is being helmed by the Russo brothers, with a scheduled release date of May 1, 2026. In this movie, Robert Downey Jr. will be portraying the character of Doctor Doom.
