After the contentious viral video from an unnamed source surfaced a few days ago, the Trump Administration has struck back forcefully at actress Selena Gomez, who stars in “Only Murders in the Building.” In a post on the White House’s official social media platform, three mothers share their heart-wrenching stories about how undocumented immigrants supposedly took the lives of their daughters. To drive home its argument, the post specifically tagged Gomez within the message. As a movie reviewer, I find this exchange to be a stark contrast in tone and content between entertainment and politics, leaving me with a sense of unease.
Gomez faced heavy criticism following her initial post, which began with her expressing her sympathy and regret, stating “‘I’m truly sorry. I wish there was something I could do, but I can’t figure it out. I’ll exhaust every possible solution, I assure you.’” This statement was in reaction to the numerous Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids that resulted in the detention and deportation of individuals residing illegally in the country, as well as the commitment to prevent border crossings from Mexico at all costs.
The White House’s post appears to have been a specific reply, as suggested by its selective phrasing. It says:

Kayla Hamilton, Jocelyn Nungaray, and Rachel Morin tragically lost their lives at the hands of unauthorized immigrants. The brave mothers of these victims spoke out directly to @Selenagomez and others who stand against border security.
The Controversy Has Not Been Calmed By the White House
Gomez’s initial video sparked strong opinions, and the White House response mirrored that divisiveness, if not more so. This reaction tweet has garnered significant attention, currently viewed by approximately four million users on Twitter, with 10,000 shares and over two thousand comments to boot.
On the official White House social media platform, it’s understandable that many people back President Trump’s initiatives regarding deportation and border control. Yet, surprisingly few of these supporters were prepared to offer a measured response. Instead, they lashed out at Gomez, stating she should feel ashamed, has reached her end, and is disrespecting the victims mentioned in the post.
Indeed, the post highlights three instances where individuals who entered the country unlawfully are linked to serious crimes, despite the vast majority of border crossers experiencing no issues. This point was challenged by others responding to the post, with some presenting statistics about crime rates among white Americans, others asserting that America is not and will never be exclusively a white nation, and many accusing the official White House account of bullying and targeting a U.S. citizen for expressing an opinion protected by the First Amendment.
Including those who questioned why government resources were used in addressing celebrities’ personal views, it appears that this issue has only highlighted how deeply divided and contradictory opinions on the matter have become.
