On the grand night of the 2025 Grammys, I was left spellbound as a kaleidoscope of emotions unfolded. From Beyoncé’s historic victories to The Weeknd’s impromptu performance, and from Kanye West and Bianca Censori’s questionable red carpet incident to Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ heartfelt tribute to Los Angeles, the evening was brimming with unforgettable moments – a testament to the power of music.
Beyoncé Finally Wins Album of the Year
During the 2025 Grammy Awards on Sunday evening, Beyoncé won album of the year for the first time. She was up against André 3000 (with New Blue Sun), Sabrina Carpenter (Short n’ Sweet), Charli xcx (BRAT), Jacob Collier (Djesse Vol. 4), Billie Eilish (HIT ME HARD AND SOFT), Chappell Roan (The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess) and Taylor Swift (THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT). The L.A. Fire Department were there to present the award as part of a broadcast that emphasized fire relief, and it was announced at the end that $7 million had been raised for these efforts. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars Pay Tribute to L.A. Following Wildfires
As a dedicated fan, I couldn’t help but be moved by the heartfelt performance of “California Dreamin'” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars at the 2025 Grammys. Following a poignant video showcasing the devastating impact of wildfires on the L.A. community, they delivered a poignant, acoustic version of The Mamas & the Papas’ 1965 classic. With tears in her eyes, Gaga expressed her love for California at the end of their performance, which was met with a thunderous standing ovation from the crowd. Grammy host Trevor Noah praised their tribute, urging everyone to contribute what they can to MusiCares fire relief, an initiative by the Recording Academy to support those affected by these disasters. Kendrick Lamar Sweeps All of His Categories
During the 2025 Grammy Awards, Kendrick Lamar took home two prestigious awards: Song of the Year and Record of the Year for “Not Like Us”. Miley Cyrus presented him with the Record of the Year award, joking about possibly announcing Beyoncé’s name instead. After a playful moment, she announced that Lamar had won. Upon receiving the golden gramophone trophy, an elated Lamar dedicated his win to the city of Los Angeles. Notably, Lamar swept every category he was nominated in. Kanye West and Bianca Censori Shock Grammys With Red Carpet Moment
At the 2025 Grammys red carpet, it took less than 20 minutes for Kanye West and his wife, Bianca Censori, to create an unexpected moment that would be a hot topic among viewers even after the event concluded. When they initially stepped onto the carpet, Censori was wrapped in a fur coat with a high neck, which she held together tightly. Immediately, additional security measures were enforced, and photographers were asked to maintain a six-inch distance, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter on their red carpet coverage. As the crowd went silent upon their arrival, Censori dropped her coat to unveil an exceptionally see-through minidress with an open, nude mesh design that seemed to have no undergarments underneath. A female photographer was heard commenting, “What a surprise!” for more details, check out Laurie Brookins’ report.
The Grammys Get Political
It appears that Donald Trump is once again making political statements at awards shows, a shift from the largely apolitical ceremonies last year as celebrities kept quiet following their vocal opposition to Trump during his first term. In contrast, the 2025 Grammys, held during Trump’s second term, saw numerous references to some of the president’s most contentious actions early in his second term. Lady Gaga delivered one of the strongest criticisms, speaking out against Trump’s anti-trans executive orders, including a first-day proclamation that only male and female genders would be recognized in the U.S., with these genders being non-changeable. Accepting the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her duet with Bruno Mars on “Die With a Smile,” Gaga asserted, “Trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love. The queer community deserves to be uplifted. Music is love.” You can read more about this here. — Hilary Lewis
The Weeknd Surprises Audience With Grammys Performance
In 2025, The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) unexpectedly graced the stage at the Grammy Awards, a performance that came after he had declared three years earlier that he would boycott the event following his snub in 2021. The Recording Academy’s CEO, Harvey Mason jr., introduced this performance while reflecting on the criticism the Academy had received, particularly from The Weeknd himself. In 2021, The Weeknd criticized the Recording Academy after his album “After Hours” was overlooked for the Album of the Year category despite spending over three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and his single “Blinding Lights” being snubbed for Record of the Year. He expressed his discontent on Twitter, stating, “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans, and the industry transparency…” (Lexy Perez)
Beyoncé Makes History With Country Album ‘Cowboy Carter’
It’s fair to assume that Beyoncé was genuinely taken aback by her win for best country album at the 2025 Grammy Awards, a category she made history in as the first Black woman to win for Cowboy Carter. Taylor Swift, who previously won best country album in 2010 for Fearless, presented Beyoncé with the honor. As Swift announced her name, the camera panned to Beyoncé, who appeared stunned by the win, and this was evident during her acceptance speech. “Wow, I really wasn’t expecting this,” she said after embracing Swift on stage. “Wow, I wanna thank God — Oh my God! — that I’m still able to do what I love after so many years. Oh my God!” (by Carly Thomas)
Chappell Roan Comes Down on Music Industry During Speech
At the 2025 Grammys, Chappell Roan was crowned Best New Artist, and she seized the opportunity to shed light on the challenges faced by emerging artists in the music industry. Victoria Monet, last year’s winner, presented Roan with this year’s award. The “HOT TO GO” singer expressed gratitude towards her fellow nominees, saying they helped her get through the previous year. On stage, Roan carried a notebook containing remarks she had promised herself she would make if she ever won a Grammy. Addressing industry heavyweights, she demanded that record labels provide a fair wage and healthcare to developing artists, receiving applause from the audience. Doechii Gets Emotional During Inspirational Acceptance Speech
2025 saw Doechii expressing heartfelt sentiments as she received her first Grammy for Best Rap Album (for “Alligator Bites Never Heal”). Upon being announced the winner by Cardi B, Doechii couldn’t help but shed tears. Once on stage, the rapper acknowledged that only three women have won in this category since its introduction in 1989, with Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and now Doechii among them. “I poured my heart and soul into this mixtape,” she emotionally conveyed through her tears. “I shared my life experiences. I endured so much, committed myself to sobriety, and God promised me that I would be rewarded and shown the heights of success. I must thank God.” — Carly Thomas
Quincy Jones Tribute Features Cynthia Erivo, Will Smith and a Medley of Iconic Hits
On Sunday evening at the Grammys, many musicians paid their respects to the recently deceased Quincy Jones. This music icon, who passed away on November 4th, was celebrated with a medley of several songs he contributed to throughout his illustrious career as a record producer, film composer, versatile artist, entertainment executive, and philanthropist. Will Smith introduced the tribute, referring to him affectionately as “Q” and acknowledging him as one of the most impactful and innovative figures of our times. Cynthia Erivo, Janelle Monaé, Lainey Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, and Jacob Collier then performed a medley of his famous songs as part of the tribute. Charli XCX Goes Full ‘Brat’ Alongside Julia Fox and Alex Consani
At the 2025 Grammys, Charli XCX demonstrated a rebellious spirit in her performance of “360.” Starting with a parking garage outside the Crypto.com Arena alongside Gabbriette Bechtel and Alex Consani from the Grammy-nominated music video, she set the stage ablaze with a party atmosphere. As is her style, Charli XCX carried this energy throughout the venue, accompanied by her entourage before moving inside. Later, on the main stage, she performed “Guess,” maintaining her distinctive party vibe at the Grammys. The performance resembled a club scene, with Julia Fox joining in later. During the show, Charli XCX danced around the stage as only she can. Notably, all the unused garments from the performance will be donated to survivors of domestic violence. More details here. — McKinley Franklin.
