This week, actor Wallace Shawn – known for his roles in “The Princess Bride” and “Clueless” – drew a parallel between Israel’s handling of Gaza and the actions of Nazi Germany.
Shawn, of Jewish background, expressed on the “Katie Halper Show” that Israel’s actions are as morally reprehensible as those committed by the Nazis.
Shawn stated, ‘Israeli forces occupied land belonging to others, displacing residents from their homes and committing acts reminiscent of the atrocities inflicted upon the Jews by the Nazis.’ He further emphasized, ‘Such actions are difficult to surpass in terms of evilness.’
When discussing the similarities drawn to the Nazis, Shawn clarified: “In certain aspects, it’s more appalling because they seem to take pride in their actions. Hitler at least attempted to conceal his wrongdoings towards the Jews. The Israelis, on the other hand, appear to be almost boastful about their actions, which is not only shockingly evil but seems beyond reproach. It’s as wicked as wickedness can get. If someone fails to acknowledge this as evil, it might be challenging to have a conversation with them, perhaps due to temporary madness.
In another part of the show, Shawn contemplated his progressive political views, admitting that initially, upon recognizing he was part of the privileged group profiting from the current world order, he grappled with self-loathing. However, over time, even though his disdain for the system hasn’t lessened, he no longer harbors hatred towards others, stating, “I don’t really hate anybody anymore.
In the future, he stated, “It’s possible that some Israelis currently backing their nation’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank may find themselves asking in a decade, ‘Why did I support that?’
As a gamer immersed in historical simulations, I’ve come to realize that every day, whether intentionally or not, the actions of [Israelis] might be fueling an unimaginable level of hostility. It’s like playing a game where the tension and animosity are constantly escalating.
Shawn is widely recognized for his diverse acting roles across films, TV shows, and voiceovers. He’s lent his voice to both The Incredibles and the Toy Story series, and appears on Young Sheldon on television. In addition to his entertainment work, he often collaborates with groups like Jewish Voice for Peace, a prominent global organization that advocates progressive Jewish views against Zionism, as stated on their website.
As a passionate advocate, I’ve consistently expressed my concerns regarding Israel’s approach towards the Palestinian people. In a 2014 piece for The Hollywood Reporter, I penned down my thoughts, stating, “Once one delves deeper into the history, it becomes evident that the rage of Palestinians can’t be quelled by taking their children’s lives. That’s an illusion. Human beings aren’t wired to respond in such a manner.
