The Marvel Cinematic Universe remains the dominant superhero franchise, but with the debut of James Gunn’s DC Universe, titled “Creature Commandos”, a potential challenger seems to be emerging. One notable aspect of Gunn’s DCU is that Xolo Maridueña, who portrayed Blue Beetle in the old DC Extended Universe (DCEU), is set to reprise his role in this new franchise. However, if recent whispers are accurate, he might also make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It’s increasingly hard for actors to join a single superhero franchise without having worked in another; we might be running out of talented actors. So, it doesn’t come as a shock that there are whispers about Xolo Maridueña being considered for the part of Nova in the MCU. When asked about it by That Hashtag Show, he was tight-lipped, but his enthusiasm for the role was evident when he mentioned he would be keen if offered the opportunity.

Previously, Marvel Studios publicly acknowledged they were exploring a Nova-centric project, featuring the Nova Corps character from Xandar’s planet. This team made an appearance in the initial Guardians of the Galaxy film, with Glenn Close portraying Nova Prime. She reprised her role for the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind roller coaster at Epcot. However, it remains unclear if this project will materialize as a movie or a series on Disney+. As we approach almost a year since the initial announcement, there’s still uncertainty about the current status of the project – whether Marvel is still working on it or has shifted their focus elsewhere.
Should Xolo Maridueña take on the role of Nova in the new DCU, and if Blue Beetle appears in this universe as well, he’d likely have some of the most prominent characters under his belt across these two superhero franchises. This would undeniably be an impressive feat. Yet, given how rapidly both DC and Marvel are expanding, it’s possible that title might not last him for too long.
Although Blue Beetle is likely to appear in his own animated series soon and might pop up in forthcoming DC films, the Nova project is still a few years off, at minimum. However, it’s not impossible that Nova could make a surprise appearance in an upcoming Marvel movie or show. For now, we just need to be patient and watch how things unfold.
