Inexcusable

Almost everyone associated with Emilia Pérez, which has been nominated for 13 Academy Awards, appears to be distancing themselves from its star, Karla Sofía Gascón, following the public exposure of past offensive comments and subsequent attempts at apologies that only seem to make the situation worse. Notable figures such as Zoe Saldaña and Netflix have seemingly excluded Gascón from this year’s awards season discussion, despite her groundbreaking nomination for Best Actress – the first time a trans actress has been nominated in this category by the Academy Awards. As award season reaches its climax, director Jacques Audiard is the latest person to create distance from the Oscar-nominated actress, putting herself in a difficult position.

In an interview with Deadline, Audiard voiced his dismay over Gascón’s remarks and the way things transpired as Emilia Pérez tried to make amends for her actions. While Emilia Pérez has been a subject of controversy for several reasons, Audiard remains proud of the film despite being distressed by the situation with Gascón casting a shadow over the movie’s accolades.

Indeed, it’s unfortunate that the situation has left no room for anything else, which brings me great sadness. Reflecting on our past work together with Karla Sofia brings back cherished memories of the strong bond and exceptional camaraderie we shared, built on trust. However, reading something she said that was abhorrent and deserving of contempt has undeniably impacted our relationship. It’s like falling into a bottomless pit because what Karla Sofia did is inexcusable.

Ever since my old tweets dating back to 2016 became public, I’ve found myself under increased scrutiny. Some of those tweets were regrettable and offensive, targeting various ethnic groups, while others were harsh towards individuals in the entertainment industry. Matters escalated when I tried to issue a series of partial apologies that failed to acknowledge my actions fully. As a result, I deactivated my account and saw my aspirations for awards season fading away. I’ve decided not to attend events like the Critics’ Choice, PGAs, and several others due to the controversy surrounding me. Although I am an Oscar nominee, Netflix, who produced Emilia Pérez, will not cover any expenses related to the event. This means that if I choose to go, I would have to pay for my travel, clothing, hairstyling, and so on myself.

Jacques Audiard Hasn’t Spoken To Karla Sofía Gascón Since the Controversy

The debate surrounding the film has undoubtedly affected those connected to it. Zoe Saldaña is often seen as the favorite for Best Supporting Actress, and it appeared that she would be a shoo-in for the Academy Award for Best International Feature. However, some speculate that this may be reconsidered due to a perception of association with the controversy. As for director Denis Villeneuve, he appears to be maintaining silence regarding Agnès Gascón because he stated that they have not communicated since the controversy arose.

I haven’t communicated with her, and I have no desire to do so at the moment. Her self-destructive behavior leaves me baffled as to why she persists in this destructive path. I can’t fathom the reasons behind her harming herself. It’s equally puzzling to me why she’s causing pain to those close to her, including the crew and cast members like Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, who all put so much effort into our film. Her actions are hurting us, and I’m struggling to comprehend why she continues to inflict this harm upon us. Given her current state, I believe she needs time to contemplate and take responsibility for her choices. Therefore, I choose not to reach out to her at this time.

Regardless of personal opinions towards the movie, one individual’s behavior shouldn’t overshadow the dedication and effort put forth by numerous people involved in the project. During this last part of the award season, Audiard expressed a sense of sadness as he considers the effects Gascón’s actions may have on others who are also nominated for significant awards.

I’m looking forward to being part of it, but there’s a tinge of sadness as well. I had high spirits about returning here, but now, we need to push past this melancholy if things aren’t crystal clear. If needed, we should clarify the situation and spend time strengthening our arguments for this film. I’m not in this alone; Zoe is with me. I intend to support and protect her, as she’s invaluable. The same goes for my dedicated crew who worked tirelessly on this project. I won’t let them go.

Emilia Pérez is currently streaming on Netflix.
