New Documentary Explores Halyna Hutchins’ Death on ‘Rust’ Set

After the unfortunate incident on the set of Alec Baldwin’s Western film “Rust” where Halyna Hutchins tragically lost her life during an accidental shooting on October 21, 2021, Hutchins is now being honored with a documentary about her life and career at Hulu. This renewed attention aims to provide the respect and care that Halyna deserves following this tragic event.

By December 23, 2024, I’m delighted to share that the involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin have been dismissed. Now, in an effort to shed light on the unfortunate incident, a documentary is set to be released by Hulu.

The tragic event surrounding Hutchins’s death in the film industry is still vivid, especially for his family and friends. This upcoming documentary offers viewers an intimate perspective by presenting firsthand stories from fellow cast and crew members who were present on that fateful day.

Titled “Last Take: Rust and the Tale of Halyna,” this film, helmed and created by Rachel Mason, is scheduled to debut on March 11. It promises to give viewers an intimate look into that fateful day and its subsequent events, as recounted by many who experienced it directly. In her own words, Rachel Mason stated:

I held Halyna in high regard for numerous reasons; she was not just a friend, but also a partner in creativity. During her life, it never crossed my mind to create a film about her – rather, my dream was to collaborate with her on various projects and offer my support as she embarked upon the many films she was destined to make.

After Halyna’s passing, there was an overwhelming amount of media attention that made it seem like her memory was being overshadowed by surrounding disputes. Our movie intends to focus on her, providing a glimpse into the lives of those who were with her during her last 12 days. It is our hope that through their stories, we can present an incomplete yet vivid portrait of Halyna to the world.

‘Rust’ Reviews Prove Audiences Can’t Stop Thinking About Hutchins

The tragic demise of Hutchins significantly impacted the world of filmmaking and ignited numerous discussions concerning on-set safety and armorer competence. Regrettably, Hutchins’ mother chose not to attend the movie’s eventual premiere; however, many attendees expressed their thoughts about the film’s debut on Letterboxd instead.

After viewing the world debut, my initial thoughts are that it was beautifully put together. However, I’m not convinced they should have proceeded with the film’s production. As for the storyline itself, it offers a typical contemporary spin on a western genre, featuring less-than-stellar acting. It’s evident which scenes were filmed by Halyna and which weren’t. Regrettably, I was left feeling indifferent following the screening. Nevertheless, it served as a moving homage to her, and I hope that her family will secure sufficient funds after this premiere.

Another reviewer had a contrasting opinion of the controversial project:

I attended the world premiere of the movie, but unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned since the film is actually excellent. I went into it with very low expectations, but I ended up enjoying myself. I hope the movie receives the recognition it deserves, so my efforts weren’t wasted.

Baldwin is at the center of a civil case filed by Hutchins’ family.
