The film titled “Heart Eyes” was recently screened in theaters, blending romance and humor with a dash of gory violence. The movie, with its playful wit, follows the infamous “Heart Eyes Killer,” or HEK for short, who is notorious for his Valentine’s Day rampage, focusing on eliminating romantic couples. Previously active in various cities, it seems that this year, HEK has chosen Seattle as his new hunting ground.
In keeping with the tradition of slasher films, the movie kicks off with a gruesome killing, adding both suspense and a dash of wit. Here, a narcissistic couple is murdered during their proposal by an unseen killer named HEK, who then proceeds to eliminate anyone who gets in his way between him and this vacuous pair. Following the grisly incident, Detectives Hobbs (Devon Sawa) and Shaw (Jordana Brewster) arrive at the scene. This is a playful nod to the 2019 film “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” a connection that the two detectives are blissfully unaware of when it’s brought to their attention.
Later on, spectators encounter Ally (played by Olivia Holt), a jewelry company pitch designer who’s fresh off a breakup. In a not-so-successful pitch attempt, her boss introduces Jay Simmons (Mason Gooding), a renowned designer, to the team. Earlier that day, they had a chance encounter at a coffee shop, but Ally made an awkward exit after humiliating herself in his presence. Despite this, he asks her out for dinner for some pre-pitch collaboration. Their interaction leads to an unexpected kiss, making people think they’re more than just colleagues. This kiss, intended to mislead Ally’s ex, has attracted the attention of the Heart Eyes Killer, placing them in danger.

As Ally and Jay step out of the restaurant, they’re noticed by HEK, who follows them all the way to Ally’s apartment. Once inside her home, Ally attends to Jay’s wound, a cut he received on the door of her building. Suddenly, HEK emerges from Ally’s closet and assaults them. They manage to flee, but their getaway taxi driver meets an untimely end at the hands of the killer, leaving them no choice but to elude him by foot. In some miraculous turn of events, they find themselves in a deserted warehouse where they become separated. Ally eventually winds up at a closed-down amusement park.
In the nick of time, the police appear, but unfortunately, Jay gets mistakenly identified as HEK and is quickly whisked away for interrogation by Detectives Hobbs and Shaw. Unfortunately, the true culprit arrives at the police station, shuts off the power, and murders most of the officers just moments before Ally and Jay can flee. They make a beeline for a drive-in theater, where many couples were celebrating Valentine’s Day. Consequently, when HEK shows up, he starts slaughtering anyone who comes into contact with him.
Ally and Jay ultimately confronted HEK directly and found it surprisingly simple to defeat him. When they removed his mask to unveil his face, no one could identify him, which brought a chuckle among the audience since HEK had never been visually presented in Heart Eyes before. Despite this, everyone believed that HEK was permanently eliminated from the scene.
After leaving her apartment, Ally hops into a car provided thoughtfully by Detective Shaw, who miraculously survived HEK’s assault at the police station. It’s evident that Ally and Jay may have stumbled upon someone disguised as HEK, but they failed to eliminate his menace. Consequently, this elusive serial killer remains active, potentially lurking closer than they suspect.

Following her arrival home, Ally gets an enigmatic call from HEK demanding she meet at St. Valentine’s Chapel if she wants Jay to survive. Upon her arrival, Jay is bound and HEK is menacingly hovering over him. As David (Yoson An), the IT guy from the police station, removes his mask, Ally realizes that he’s someone she had a fleeting encounter with and initially fails to recognize. This moment serves as a humorous twist in the storyline. David then clarifies that the individual they murdered was merely an ardent fan named Eli (Vinnie Bennett), who aspired to join their Valentine’s Day horror prank, but things took a sinister turn.
At that very instant, Detective Shaw makes his appearance on the scene. It turns out there were three murderers, operating as a group known as HEK, and one of them was a police officer. A fight breaks out among the four, but Ally and Jay manage to come out on top just in time for Valentine’s Day. After their harrowing experience left them battered and bruised, they discover they have developed feelings for each other. Over the next year, they confess their love and get engaged. The whimsical romance of Heart Eyes brings a touching conclusion to the movie, as HEK is apprehended and love endures. Currently playing in theaters, be sure to catch Heart Eyes.
