Taylor Thompson’s Oakland-based brand, 5000, is famous for showcasing its Bay Area pride proudly. Last season, it honored San Francisco’s iconic Mabuhay Gardens punk venue during its New York Fashion Week debut. For its inaugural runway at NYFW, the 2024 CFDA Fashion Fund finalist celebrates his hometown again, delving into and expanding upon the meanings and limitations of a peculiar Northern California slang term.
Titled “Bootsy,” the Fall/Winter 2025 collection of 5000 is centered around the Bay Area colloquialism. Often spelled “Bootsee,” this term can refer to someone or something perceived as un-cool or awkward, a meaning popularized by the E-40 song of the same name, or alternatively, it signifies something bold and eccentric when referring to funk legend Bootsy Collins. Essentially, “bootsy” embodies individuality and raw authenticity; contrasting with “camp’s” subversive and rebellious nature in the show notes, this collection seeks to delve deeper into “bootsy” as not just a slang term but a cultural artifact and social study.
The inaugural fashion show for brand 5000 took place indoors on the rooftop of the Nine Orchard Hotel in the Lower East Side, marking a significant leap from last season’s outdoor event. Accompanied by a fittingly eclectic soundtrack reminiscent of San Francisco – with foghorns, fireworks, and BART train sounds – models showcased 29 unique outfits on a white runway. Surrounded by the city skyline, an exclusive gathering of guests watched the spectacle unfold.
In this collection, tailored garments continue to shine, featuring traditional double-breasted suits in shades of grey, black, and pinstripes, some even sporting a distinctive pocket on one side of the jacket. These are contrasted by bold, bleach-dyed blazers and pants that stand out. Yet, the seemingly ordinary suiting pieces are given a unique twist with the addition of ribbon ties, reminiscent of the style known as “bootsy”.
As a fashion enthusiast, I’m consistently amazed by 5000’s dedication to redefining modern menswear. They’ve introduced Oxford shirts with a unique twist – the middle is adorned with a curved buttoning design that adds a touch of sophistication. Plus, their collection boasts an array of groundbreaking layering options and textural combinations, keeping my wardrobe fresh and exciting!
As a lover of unique style, I was thrilled to witness a fashion display that aimed to redefine what’s considered chic by showcasing the unexpected: transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary. Partway down the runway, models held up pleated capes over their heads, only to release them, revealing they were in fact trains attached to the jackets beneath. This creative twist added a touch of surprise and elegance to an otherwise rough-and-tumble aesthetic.
