George Lucas’ “Star Wars” narrative is equally focused on spaceships and the colossal factions that pilot them across the galaxy. The battles between the Separatists, Republic, and Empire versus the Rebels wouldn’t be nearly as intense or entertaining without the involvement of large vessels firing lasers and missiles at each other while soaring among the stars.
Engaging in a thought experiment about ranking the spacecraft from the “Star Wars” universe can be an enjoyable activity, but there are some conditions we must establish. To start, this discussion focuses on ships, not bases, which means the Death Star is excluded. Second, since the “Star Wars” extended universe is vast, we’ll limit our analysis to vessels featured in the current “Star Wars” canon. Given these guidelines, let’s set course for the stars and explore if possessing the most powerful spacecraft is enough for a faction to dominate the galaxy of “Star Wars.
15. Jedi Vector
In my gaming world, I’ve come across these ships known as Jedi Vectors, and just as their name suggests, they were once the exclusive ride of the Jedi Knights on their Order missions. Back during the High Republic era, you could spot these sleek vessels everywhere. However, during the Clone Wars, with Jedi being spread thin across the battlefronts, sightings of vectors became less frequent. Post-Empire ascendancy, it’s almost impossible to find someone flying one because they were engineered for the galaxy’s most potent Force wielders.
Jedi Vectors refer to swift and optimized spaceships designed primarily for speed and efficiency. Equipped with highly lethal weaponry capable of pinpoint attacks, these vessels possess extraordinary features that make them ideal for precise strikes. However, they come with significant limitations. Without the agility of a Jedi, users can’t fully exploit their weaponry and maneuverability. Moreover, most individuals can’t even activate a Vector due to the requirement of a lightsaber as the key to start it. Despite their impressive capabilities, these ships suffer from restricted accessibility, which impacts their overall standing.
14. The Phantom
In one popular “Star Wars” series titled “Rebels,” the ship known as the Phantom made its debut. Unlike other spacecraft, this vessel wasn’t designed for solo journeys across the cosmos; instead, it serves as an additional ship that can be coupled with a light freighter to function as a defensive turret, shuttle, and various other equipment. The Phantom was often paired with a ship called the Ghost, and under the leadership of Hera Syndulla, these two vessels carried out numerous successful missions against the Empire.
The Phantom demonstrates that a ship doesn’t necessarily need heavy weaponry to be formidable. Equipped with only a laser cannon and turret, with minimal missiles and defensive features, it stands out for its stealth capabilities, particularly when wielded by Rebels. The fact that this seemingly modest craft was able to complete numerous successful missions prior to its destruction in battle at Reklam Station underscores the surprising strength of this compact vessel.
13. A-wing interceptor
The A-wing spacecraft was highly valued by the Rebellion, even though it didn’t debut in the initial “Star Wars” series. It first appeared in “Return of the Jedi,” where it played a crucial part during the Battle of Endor. Similar to the Jedi Vector, the A-wing is an agile interceptor, prioritizing speed above other attributes; advanced variants such as the RZ-2 A-Wing are among the swiftest ships in the entire Star Wars universe.
Instead of directly challenging a TIE Fighter in combat, A-wings excel at swift maneuvers that outmatch any opponent, making them perfect for hit-and-run tactics, particularly effective when Rebels engage with Imperial forces who have an advantage. In terms of sheer firepower, A-wings may lag behind other ships, but their strategic value is undeniable – this is why they were the preferred choice among Rebels and instrumental in their victories against the Empire.
12. X-wing
In the epic saga of “Star Wars,” the X-wing starfighter is undeniably one of the most recognized spaceships. These crafts were frequently used by Rebel soldiers and played a crucial part in every major battle depicted in the original trilogy. Luke Skywalker himself piloted an X-wing during the Battle of Yavin, while hundreds of these fighters contributed to the Rebels’ ultimate victory at the end of “Return of the Jedi.” Throughout the Galactic Civil War, X-wings earned their historical significance, and they have remained essential in space battles even in the sequel trilogy.
In the Rebel Alliance, X-wings are widely favored due to their versatile arsenal. A typical X-wing is equipped with four laser cannons and proton torpedo launchers, the latter being the devastating weapon that brought down the Death Star. While X-wings might not be heavy-duty war machines, they possess enough strength to stand their ground in a battle and are common enough for Rebels to easily acquire them, since these ships often evade Imperial monitoring on mainstream trade routes.
11. TIE Defender
Beyond Darth Vader, there isn’t another villain as formidable in the “Star Wars” galaxy as Grand Admiral Thrawn. He played a significant role in driving the Empire to numerous crucial victories, while simultaneously modernizing their military forces. Among his contributions to the Imperial Navy was the development of the TIE Defender. This initiative aimed at enhancing Empire ship designs, culminating in the creation of a three-winged vessel that outmatches the familiar TIE Fighter in terms of power.
As a gamer, I can tell you that the Defender is my go-to vessel when I want to make a statement in this galaxy. It’s decked out with top-tier weaponry from the Empire, including some hefty cannons for those intense dogfights and an arsenal of missiles, transforming it into a fearsome bomber. However, what truly sets the Defender apart isn’t its offensive prowess; instead, it’s the robust deflector shields that make it almost indestructible. And when things go south, the ship can engage hyperdrive to escape any predicament – although using that feature comes with a hefty risk, as it might just cost the pilot their life. Thrawn was seeking a ship capable of effortlessly annihilating Rebel forces and escaping capture in dire circumstances, and the Defender fits that bill perfectly.
10. Vader’s TIE Advanced
Among various iterations of the TIE fighter, Darth Vader’s version stands out as the most robust. In the initial “Star Wars” film, this unique starship was introduced when Vader commanded the Black Squadron to safeguard the Death Star from Rebel forces during the Battle of Yavin. The movie hinted at the extraordinary power of Vader’s TIE fighter when piloted by the Sith Lord, though it didn’t fully demonstrate its capabilities in comparison to a regular TIE fighter.
In the heat of a game, I find myself piloting Vader’s upgraded TIE Advanced, and let me tell you, it’s a game-changer! If I had been stuck with an ordinary TIE fighter during the Battle of Yavin, I wouldn’t have made it past the first “Star Wars” movie. But luck was on my side that day; my personalized ship came equipped with a full life support system and a hyperdrive. When my ship took damage in the battle, I managed to jump to a nearby planet, landing before running out of oxygen. Of course, this bad boy isn’t just about survival – it packs some serious firepower too! With its powerful cannons and mounts for secondary weapons, it can be tailored to serve as either a fighter or a bomber. It turns out that this model eventually became the blueprint for the entire line of more advanced TIE fighters in the Empire’s arsenal.
9. Slave I
Initially introduced in “The Empire Strikes Back,” the iconic spaceship known as Slave I made its debut with Boba Fett leading the way into the Star Wars universe. The original trilogy provided only glimpses of this vessel, yet the prequels delved deeper into the ship’s history. In “Attack of the Clones,” we had the opportunity to watch Jango Fett, Boba Fett’s father, manning the ship, and were able to observe some impressive features that make Slave I an exceptional starship.
The spacecraft known as Slave I boasts exceptional maneuverability and can blend effortlessly among space rocks and debris due to its flat underside. However, it’s not just its design that makes Slave I formidable – Boba Fett and his father have customized the ship extensively. The vessel is equipped with miniature lasers that are its only visible weapons, but beneath the surface lies a multitude of concealed weaponry, enhancing Slave I’s ability to outmatch its size. In terms of defense, the Fetts installed robust shield generators and an abundance of advanced sensors, making it challenging for many spacecraft across the galaxy to evade Slave I’s detection. It’s debatable whether any ship of comparable size can rival Slave I in combat, with the exception of the Millennium Falcon.
8. The Millennium Falcon
Without needing to watch even one scene from “Star Wars,” many people are familiar with the tale surrounding the Millennium Falcon due to its remarkable feat – completing the Kessel Run in fewer than 12 parsecs, a distance unit typically associated with space travel. This modified freighter, originally designed for cargo, has been upgraded to resemble a warship, boasting quad-laser cannons, blaster laser turrets, and an array of missiles powerful enough to pierce the sides of most adversarial ships.
Over time, the iconic Millennium Falcon has been piloted by legendary characters such as Lando Calrissian, Han Solo, and Rey Skywalker, yet it’s essential to remember that the ship is much more than just its current pilot. It has persisted through various decades, numerous leadership shifts, and intense galactic conflicts. On multiple occasions, this spaceship altered the destiny of the galaxy and cemented itself as one of the most remarkable vessels in history. Even today, fans continue to ponder if the Falcon could best Boba Fett’s Slave I in a duel, but given its history of overcoming adversity, it seems improbable that it wouldn’t stand its ground against such a formidable opponent.
7. Mon Calamari Star Cruiser
In this section, the list significantly escalates in combat capabilities. Ships such as X-wings and Millennium Falcon are pivotal fighting vessels in the “Star Wars” universe, but on a personal level, these fighters struggle against warships controlled by the galaxy’s dominant forces. Once we discuss ships like cruisers and Star Destroyers, we step into an entirely new tier of power.
In the higher echelons of starship combat, it’s significant to acknowledge that the Rebel alliance generally faces an uphill battle. One of their most valuable and imposing vessels, the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser, which appeared in “Return of the Jedi,” is a crucial asset for the Rebel fleet. However, despite its importance, it typically finds itself at a disadvantage when matched against comparable Imperial ships. This colossal star cruiser is equipped to serve as a capital ship, housing numerous smaller fighters. As a result, it boasts a robust hull, a gigantic shield generator, and an arsenal of guns powerful enough to reduce numerous TIE fighters into space debris. Despite being the underdog, the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser proved instrumental during the Battle of Endor and emerged victorious against the Imperial forces.
6. The Malevolence
In “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” fans would instantly spot The Malevolence – a formidable vessel once under General Grievous during the Clone Wars. This heavy cruiser was notorious for inflicting significant damage on the Republic’s navy. Spanning over three miles, this ship is a veritable fortress, with its entirety brimming with lethal point defense systems, high-powered lasers, and missile batteries. In case the weaponry fails to suffice, it also houses a miniature swarm of fighter aircraft capable of wreaking further havoc.
To gain a more vivid understanding of the immense size and power of the Malevolence, consider this comparison: The Malevolence dwarfs the Invisible Hand, the colossal Trade Federation vessel flown by General Grievous and Count Dooku at the start of “Revenge of the Sith.” Notably, the Invisible Hand is the largest Trade Federation ship ever depicted on screen, yet it’s still smaller than one-third the size of the Malevolence. The Malevolence was so powerful that even after fending off an entire fleet of Republic ships, it was ultimately destroyed only by Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
5. Imperial Star Destroyer
In the classic “Star Wars” film, the Imperial Star Destroyer symbolizes the pinnacle of the Empire’s naval dominance. It’s the initial vessel that grabs your attention, its massive form instantly suggesting the Empire’s strength. During the Empire’s zenith, these Star Destroyers roamed the galaxy, crushing any opposition they encountered.
As a devoted fan, I’m always awestruck by the mighty Star Destroyers that tower over a mile in length. Yet, it’s their ion engines that truly astound me, allowing them to dance gracefully even amidst fierce battlefield maneuvers. In combat, these colossal ships boast an arsenal of laser turrets, turbo laser cannons, ion cannons, and tractor beams. If the situation calls for it, they can also summon a swarm of TIE fighters, transforming into the epicenter of an overwhelming assault force. It’s no secret that these titans played a pivotal role in the Empire’s long reign, making life difficult for the Rebels who initially relied on cunning and stealth to evade Imperial forces.
4. Super Star Destroyers
In the cosmos, Super Star Destroyers aren’t exactly known for their creative names, but they do clearly indicate their identity. These colossal vessels represented the pinnacle of the Imperial Navy, although very few actually ventured through space. Among the Imperial Fleet, The Arbitrator, The Annihilator, and The Ravager were considered the crown jewels. Following the Empire’s collapse, these formidable ships became highly prized assets across the galaxy.
In the “Star Wars” universe, the larger a ship, the more powerful it appears to be. True to their name, Super Star Destroyers are indeed larger and better-equipped than the regular models. Their bodies are reinforced with thicker hulls and adorned with an abundance of weaponry. They can accommodate vast numbers of TIE fighters and X-wings for combat support. The Emperor had a personal Super Star Destroyer, known as the Eclipse, which was so massive it could carry over 400,000 passengers and crew members. Besides the Emperor’s own Destroyer, the Empire constructed only one other Super Star Destroyer, but that one stands alone in its class.
3. Xyston-class Star Destroyers
In the Star Wars universe, the power level of their spacecraft has gradually increased over time due to a tendency for enhancement. To provide some perspective, designing spaceships is no walk in the park, and there are limited ways to boost a vessel’s power. Even the most innovative minds across the galaxy might come up with a revolutionary warship design, but when faced with a conundrum, designers typically enlarge existing crafts and equip them with larger weaponry.
Without a doubt, the Xyston-class Star Destroyers embody the philosophy of “bigger equals better.” During the unfolding events in “The Rise of Skywalker,” these were the colossal vessels that Emperor Palpatine was covertly constructing and arming for war. As formidable as their traditional Imperial counterparts, Xyston-class Star Destroyers inflict far greater damage. Each one is equipped with an axial superlaser reminiscent of a Death Star, capable of annihilating an entire planet. While people across the galaxy have learned to engage in combat against Star Destroyers, even a single shot from one of these warships could spell doom for an entire civilization.
2. The Executor
The Executor, being a Super Star Destroyer, boasts all the typical amenities associated with this type of vessel. Of course, it possesses an enormous size – that’s a given. It also houses a colossal workforce numbering in the hundreds of thousands. And let’s not forget about its fleet of smaller vessels neatly tucked away within its docking facilities.
As a dedicated gamer immersed in the Star Wars universe, let me tell you, the Executor is my ultimate spaceship. It’s not just any Super Star Destroyer; it’s Darth Vader’s personal ride. That means it’s decked out with every over-the-top feature imaginable. The hull is a fortress, adorned with over 5,000 turbolasers, an arsenal of ion cannons, and missile launchers galore. When this beast was operational, it was the Empire’s strongest ship by a long shot, invincible to most attacks. The rebels couldn’t even scratch its surface with conventional weapons. Unfortunately, the Executor didn’t meet its end in a fair fight. A Rebel ship rammed into its control room, crippling all navigation systems. Ironically, a similar tactic was later used to bring down the one and only Star Wars ship that’s even more formidable than the Executor.
1. The Supremacy
In the realm of “Star Wars” spacecraft, larger is often considered superior, but the Supremacy pushes this idea to such an extent that it borders on the absurd. The Supremacy serves as the flagship for the First Order, and it surpasses every aspect of the colossal Imperial Star Destroyers that preceded it. With its immense size and overwhelming weaponry, the Supremacy strains credulity, even in a universe as fantastical as the galaxy of “Star Wars.
The Supremacy resembles two enormous, stretched-out wings, with its narrowest part measuring approximately 13 kilometers wide. In total, it spans nearly 64 kilometers across, which is so vast that it can only exist in the emptiness of space. This colossal size suits the First Order perfectly, as they utilize the Supremacy as both a mobile headquarters and a ship-building facility.
Indeed, the Supremacy is immense, boasting enough space for it to construct vessels within and hangars vast enough to accommodate entire fleets of Star Destroyers, each carrying their own swarms of X-wings and TIE fighters. The Supremacy dwarfs any Empire-built vessel, asserting its dominance as the most formidable craft in “Star Wars.” In the climax of “The Last Jedi,” the New Republic managed to destroy the Supremacy; however, much like the destruction of a Death Star, success was achieved at an enormous cost.
