Fans of high-octane action, brace yourselves for an overwhelming surge of joy! The iconic duo from the “Lethal Weapon” franchise, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, have reunited, sparking discussions about a potential fifth installment in this beloved buddy cop series. These two, who played Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh respectively in all four “Lethal Weapon” films from 1987 to 1998, recently shared the stage at the MegaCon fan convention in Orlando. This reunion is sure to heighten the anticipation for “Lethal Weapon 5” even further among action enthusiasts.
At the event, Oscar-winning filmmaker Gibson, now a figure in controversy, showcased his own panel where he delved into some of his most significant roles and even disclosed some prominent roles he declined. According to People, these roles included James Bond and the lead character Maximus Decimus Meridius from Gladiator, a part eventually portrayed by Russell Crowe, another Australian actor.
As a movie enthusiast who recently attended an intriguing event, I’ve got some exciting news to share! Footage from the event, graciously shared by fellow attendee A Couple Of Park Hoppers on YouTube, showcases the moment when the legendary Donald Glover walked onto the stage to a thunderous applause. The pair, Mel Gibson and Donald Glover, both in their golden years (Gibson at 69 and Glover at 78), shared a heartwarming hug before Glover took his seat. If the rumors of Lethal Weapon 5 are true, they’d best hurry up with production before these two action legends truly become too old for this kind of high-octane adventure!
Mel Gibson Hopes To Direct & Star in ‘Lethal Weapon 5’
Introduced in 1987, the movie “Lethal Weapon” brought to life the unforgettable team of LAPD detectives, Martin Riggs, a former Green Beret with a penchant for danger, and Roger Murtaugh, a 50-year-old police veteran who was considered too old for such exploits at the time. Portrayed by Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, this duo quickly became genre icons, leading to numerous sequels. The last time we saw them on screen was in “Lethal Weapon 4” in 1998, sparking fan anticipation for their return ever since.
In the mid-2000s, Mel Gibson faced numerous challenges to his employment in Hollywood due to alcohol problems and a string of controversies, such as antisemitic statements, allegedly homophobic comments, racist remarks, and a restraining order filed by his former partner Oksana Grigorieva. However, against all odds, Gibson has successfully navigated his way back into the industry. Last year, he announced that he will both direct and star in “Lethal Weapon 5,” a project that stems from an idea the late Richard Donner had been developing before his passing in 2021.
I will be taking over as director for the fifth installment of the Lethal Weapon series. Unfortunately, Richard Donner, who directed the previous films, has passed away. He was not only a talented filmmaker but also a dear friend, and he entrusted me with completing this project. It’s an honor to step into his shoes. He had already started working on the screenplay, so we’ve built upon that foundation, making adjustments and refining it along the way. I am quite pleased with the progress we’ve made; it’s been a delightful process for me.
