The lineup for the upcoming “Masters of the Universe” movie continues to strengthen, with two actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe added to the cast recently. Originating from a well-known toy series and animated show, “Masters of the Universe” is being helmed by director Travis Knight (of “Bumblebee” fame), and is slated for a grand theatrical release under Amazon MGM Studios in June 2026. The production of this long-awaited “Masters of the Universe” film, which has been in development since 2007, seems to be edging closer to reality with these new additions to the movie’s cast.
According to Deadline, Morena Baccarin will portray the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, while Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson has secured the role of Malcolm (also known as Fisto). Morena Baccarin is famously recognized for her roles in multiple Deadpool films and hit series like Firefly, Gotham, and Deadpool. The Sorceress of Castle Grayskull is a potent magic user and mother of Teela’s character. Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson is poised to make his mark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Davis Lawfers / Copperhead, a member of the Serpent Society in Captain America: Brave New World. His previous works include Game of Thrones, Vikings: Valhalla, and Succession. Fisto, played by Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, was initially an adversary to He-Man but later transformed into a formidable ally.
Actors Baccarin and Jóhannesson join an impressive lineup for the upcoming “Masters of the Universe” film, with Nicholas Galitzine portraying Prince Adam / He-Man and Camila Mendes playing the valiant warrior Teela. Idris Elba is cast as Man at Arms, who serves as Teela’s adoptive father and loyal ally to He-Man. The roster of villains includes Jared Leto as the infamous Skeletor, while Alison Brie takes on the role of dark magic user Evil-Lyn. Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, famously known for playing The Mountain in five seasons of “Game of Thrones”, will portray the antagonist Goat Man.
He-Man’s Long Road Back to the Big Screen
As of now, no specific details about the plot for “Masters of the Universe” have been disclosed, implying that fans will probably need to wait a while before catching a glimpse of the movie. A recent speculation hints that the film might resemble certain aspects of the 1987 “Masters of the Universe” movie, though many fans are hoping this is just a rumor. Although the upcoming “Masters of the Universe” draws inspiration from various elements in the franchise’s past, there has been no confirmation yet regarding the appearance of cherished characters such as Orko or Moss Man. Given the lengthy development process for a new “Masters of the Universe,” and the multiple attempts to craft an engaging storyline, it’s both thrilling and nerve-wracking to speculate which narrative eventually found its way into the upcoming movie.
In the 1980s, “Masters of the Universe” was a highly successful and beloved toyline, but unlike series like Transformers or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it has had difficulty maintaining its popularity in recent times. However, in the 2010s, Netflix played a significant role in revitalizing the brand with shows such as “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power,” Kevin Smith’s mature sequel series “Masters of the Universe: Revelations” and “Revolutions,” and the CGI-animated children’s series “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.” This upcoming big-budget film aims to give “Masters of the Universe” a similar boost as Michael Bay’s first Transformers movie did for that franchise. With an interesting cast and director Travis Knight, who has worked on films like Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings, Masters of the Universe is already a film worth watching.
