Demi Moore And Robert Downey Jr.’s Old Pal Rob Lowe Shares What It’s Been Like To Watch Oppenheimer And The Substance Soar: ‘I Got To Go Through This’

Robert Downey Jr. is a case of an actor who achieved Oscar recognition later in his career. He secured his first Academy Award last year, delivering a powerful performance in the 2023 film “Oppenheimer”. After Demi Moore delivered her career-best role in the 2024 movie “The Substance”, Rob Lowe spoke about witnessing the impressive growth of his two friends’ careers.

Although the Brat Pack may no longer exist, it doesn’t imply that ’80s stars have lost their talent. Last year saw Robert Downey Jr. receiving Oscar recognition, and this time around, Demi Moore has earned an Oscar nomination for her role in the body horror-comedy “The Substance.” Rob Lowe, a friend of Moore, recently shared with People magazine his feelings about witnessing the rise of their careers over the years.

It’s incredibly enjoyable. She truly merits it. She’s quite unique; she excels as an actress and shines as a genuine star. To put it simply, last year, I had the privilege of experiencing this with my eighth-grade schoolmate, Robert Downey Jr., and now this year, I’m thrilled to support Demi.

It’s truly heartening to witness friends reaching their professional pinnacles, such as seeing Robert Downey Jr. triumphantly bounce back from legal troubles and substance abuse with his stellar role in Iron Man, catapulting him to one of the top-earning actors within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Similarly inspiring is Demi Moore’s journey; her career flourished during the 80s and 90s, but as we moved into the 2000s, she seemed to take a step back, focusing more on independent projects.

After starring in the critically acclaimed film “The Substance”, Moores role broke societal norms regarding aging women. The actress felt it was the ideal opportunity in her career, as she had been reading scripts that didn’t resonate with her until this particular film by Coralie Fargeat. Despite acknowledging the potential for “The Substance” to be a smash hit or a catastrophic flop, Moores decision to gamble and accept the role was well worth it. Her success has already earned her a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award, which may pave the way for an Oscar win in the future.

Rob Lowe and Demi Moore have been friends for a long time. They proved to have great chemistry with each other in ‘80s classics like About Last Night… and St. Elmo’s Fire. They were also both featured in the documentary Brats (found on your Hulu subscription), where the success of the Andrew McCarthy project had the two pals keeping in contact to make a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel which would be amazing! Moore even posted on Instagram about her reunion with Lowe where they both saw a special screening of The Substance. The Outsiders actor apparently even gave an intro during the event. That’s the cutest thing for Lowe to support his friend by seeing and presenting her Oscar-nominated movie.

After Rob Lowe’s friends, Robert Downey Jr. and Demi Moore, received recognition from the Oscars, it shows that one can still reach career milestones at any time. Perhaps someday we’ll find “The Floor” host standing on the same podium. The movie “The Substance,” set to release in 2025, is now available for streaming on Mubi and rental platforms. Additionally, you can enjoy Downey Jr.’s Oscar-winning performance in “Oppenheimer” using your Amazon Prime subscription.
