Harrison Ford Slams AI, Praises Real Stunt Work as Irreplaceable

Veteran of Hollywood, known for his openness about filmmaking realities, has never hesitated to discuss various aspects such as storytelling, acting, or the latest trend – the increasing influence of Artificial Intelligence. Although computer-generated imagery (CGI) and advanced technology are redefining the entertainment sector, often with negative implications, Ford argues that AI is unnecessary and what truly poses a threat to his spirit are Hollywood stunt performers.

In a chat with the Wall Street Journal, Ford was inquired about his feelings regarding his image being used in projects like the latest Indiana Jones video game, where players get to experience an adventure alongside a character who bears his likeness. Instead of directly addressing the question, Ford expressed his thoughts on how modern technology might be able to place someone’s face onto another person’s body or alter voices to fit specific patterns. However, he emphasized that such technology cannot recreate the perils and effort authentic stunt artists undergo to create on-screen magic. He added that there is no necessity for AI to mimic his likeness since it is already being done…in a positive manner.

Artificial Intelligence doesn’t have to snatch your spirit, Troy Baker can do it quite affordably with his creative ideas and skills. Harrison Ford praised Troy’s exceptional work in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, saying, ‘He didn’t need AI to deliver such a stellar performance. I’m not necessary here. There’s someone following me, doing what I did. That’s the appeal. It’s about the future.’

Harrison Ford’s A.I. Comments are Right on the Nose

Ford’s statements touch on the current debate about the rising influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Hollywood, which includes both overt applications and more covert, possibly deceitful ones. Lately, some films have been criticized by vigilant viewers on social media for employing AI to create promotional materials. Last week, a poster for The Fantastic Four: First Steps was accused of leveraging AI to depict certain characters. Many people highlighted unusual hand configurations and noticeable distortions typical in images generated by AI as evidence.

Certainly,

Ford appreciates every bit of help given to his characters on-screen, but the advancement and application of AI in modern filmmaking won’t stop anytime soon. In fact, AI can perform tasks such as speeding up video edits and catching mistakes that might be missed by a human working through countless frames. Nevertheless, the use of AI instead of people for jobs is a topic under discussion, and it remains unresolved.

As technological advancements speed ahead, much like the menacing Red Hulk portrayed in the recent film “Captain America: Brave New World” by Ford, it’s apparent that Ford values maintaining a human essence amidst all this progress. However, for how long this can persist is something only future events can reveal.
