In the game Avowed, the Wizard class is primarily focused on obliterating enemies with powerful blasts. A traditional Wizard build involves selecting an element and focusing all aspects of gameplay around it. Initially, the variety of abilities may seem overwhelming; however, by deciding how you prefer to eliminate opponents, the number of choices significantly decreases. As with every class in the game, there’s room for flexibility, but for this discussion, a strategy that involves setting the screen ablaze will suffice.
In contrast to certain RPGs, the spells in Avowed come with lengthy recharge times, implying that you’ll need to switch between spells and perhaps even include basic attacks to maintain the gameplay momentum. However, if your desire is to incinerate groups of enemies using your hands, rest assured, Avowed delivers abundantly on this front. Initially, you’ll start with a close-range Fire spell, but as you progress, you’ll find yourself launching meteors from above. To balance things out, don’t forget to include defensive strategies in your playstyle, and you’ll have a well-rounded character build.
Avowed: Best Abilities & Spells For Wizard
Cover Your Enemies In Flame
In this build, the Wizard begins with Minor Missiles, which turns out to be not just an effective initial skill but also a valuable one in the late-game when fully upgraded. As we focus on Fire abilities and spells, Minor Missiles can prove useful early on due to the short range of the spell Fan the Flames that you’re taking at the time. However, if you are determined to use only Fire spells and can handle a bit of risk, it is possible to forgo Minor Missiles entirely and still achieve good results.
Since the Wizard character has a high mana consumption, Armored Essence will prove crucial (notably in combination with Harvest Essence and Arcane Seal later on). Be sure to watch for Essence stats on your equipment to maintain a steady supply of mana. At Level 5, consider selecting Wand Mastery for an incremental boost to your basic attack damage. With the lengthy cooldowns and fire-resistant adversaries prevalent, you might find yourself relying on these occasionally. However, Avowed allows room for creativity, so don’t hesitate to experiment by foregoing it.
Moving forward, I’ll primarily alternate between my primary Fire spells – Fireball and Fan the Flames. If you haven’t already, skip Minor Missile for a more balanced approach. To maintain Essence, consider Harvest Essence (you might switch to Arcane Seal later), and Ring of Fire is quite beneficial due to its defensive and offensive properties. In the late game, Scion of Flame is crucial as a Fire specialist, with Meteor Shower serving as an impressive finale when used sparingly but effectively.
Ability/Spell | Rank | Level Requirements |
---|---|---|
Armored Essence | 1 | 1/1/8 |
Fan the Flames | 2 | 1/1/8 |
Wand Mastery | 1 | 5/8/10 |
Grimoire Mastery | 4 | 5/7/9/11 |
Fireball | 3 | 5/8/10 |
Harvest Essence -> Arcane Seal | 1 | 10/13/15 -> 20/21/22 |
Ring of Fire | 2 | 10/13/15 |
Scion of Flame | 3 | 15/18/20 |
Meteor Shower | 3 | 20/21/22 |
Best Attributes For Wizard
Just Two Attributes To Worry About (Mostly)
Wizards can manage well by placing great emphasis on Might and Intelligence. The first attribute boosts spell damage, while the carry capacity increase is always welcome. On the other hand, Intelligence is crucial because of the voracious appetite of magical spells; the added defensive bonus in the form of Elemental Resistance serves as a delightful extra, complementing defensive stats from gear and abilities like Ring of Fire. With substantial values in both attributes, you establish a robust base for a versatile character build.
The characteristics you prioritize beyond Strength and Intelligence aren’t crucial, but Vitality seems most logical given that you’ve already got some defensive traits. It’s beneficial not to focus too much on Toxins and Bruising, in addition to Resistance to Elemental Damage and the various types of Damage Reduction, as this will make a Wizard more durable than what you’re accustomed to. Skills like Agility, Awareness, and Determination provide little advantage to a Wizard, so it’s best to invest fewer points in these areas and focus on where they truly matter.
Best Weapons & Armor For Wizard
Wands, Grimoires, Light Armor, And Medium Armor Are The Way
Wands are utilized for a choice between cool-down periods and navigating Fire-resistant adversaries. Unlike other builds, the affixes aren’t crucial to you, but Physical Damage is the primary concern. You’ll primarily rely on grimoires; the spells from these will be enhanced due to your selection in the Avowed abilities tree. The lower these spells reduce Ability Cost and Cooldown, the higher your damage output will be over time.
In this scenario, you’ll be donning Light and Medium Armor primarily; given that you’ll predominantly engage from a distance, these choices allow you to maximize the benefits of Armored Essence. Your main focus when it comes to armor should be on Maximum Essence, although Damage Reductions are also desirable. As for accessories like rings and amulets, prioritize items that recharge your Essence; for gloves, opt for Poison and Bleed resistance initially. Generally speaking, any gear that boosts your spell damage, resistances, or Damage Reduction is beneficial.
How To Play Wizard In Avowed
Spam Fire, Fire, And More Fire
Initially, you’ll alternate between using Minor Missile and Fan of Flames frequently, moving closer when the situation isn’t too risky. As Fireball becomes available, switch between Fan and Fireball, employing Wand attacks during cooldown periods. Upon obtaining Harvest Essence, gameplay will require more engagement, collecting Essence shards as enemies perish. Eventually, Ring of Fire will offer an emergency or proactive defense option that’s particularly effective for boss battles when you’re feeling bold.
The synergy between Scion of Flame, Meteor Shower, and Arcane Seal truly shines when combined. This union allows for an increased barrage of Fire spells with greater damage in a wider range, which can be considered the pinnacle of its power. Much like in many RPGs, reaching this point takes time, but the reward is certainly worth the patience. In essence, it serves as a compensation for any challenges encountered during the early stages of gameplay.
