Since Disney combined with Fox, Marvel enthusiasts have been on tenterhooks for hints about the X-Men within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While alternate versions of them have surfaced in films like “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” the main universe has yet to feature its own rendition of mutants and the gene that empowers them. The part of the universe dealing with these characters remains enigmatic, leaving us excited for any subtle hints suggesting an X-Men narrative.
Titled “Captain America: Brave New World,” the latest addition to Marvel Cinematic Universe’s expansive narrative, appeared to be an intriguing location for discovering hints, particularly when whispers of a potential Wolverine link began circulating prior to its premiere. Given its grand scale and scope, as Captain America navigates the more covert aspects of the MCU, it seemed well-positioned to provide clarification on ongoing questions regarding the current state of the cinematic universe’s progression. To the delight of fans, some answers were indeed revealed, but perhaps even more significantly, a hint of a Wolverine connection emerged that could potentially reshape the MCU for years to come.
With the arrival of “Brave New World”, it’s time for us to delve into the potential implications for Wolverine and the X-Men, exploring the links between them and the possible ramifications that may unfold in the days ahead.
Adamantium makes an appearance
In the movie ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ the narrative commences after General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (portrayed by Harrison Ford) is elected as U.S. President. During his inaugural address, he refers to a celestial body submerged in the Indian Ocean – an intriguing point of interest for Marvel enthusiasts. This celestial mass exists because, in the 2021 film ‘Eternals,’ the Eternals banded together to prevent a Celestial named Tiamut, who had been concealed within the Earth for eternities, from emerging and causing planetary devastation. Tiamut was petrified by Sersi (Gemma Chan) and has remained frozen ever since, poised to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe once more.
Six months following his inauguration, Ross gathers international heads of state and notable figures at the White House for a meeting regarding a pact about the mysterious “Celestial Island.” Given the recent emergence of Celestial in the Indian Ocean, several nations such as India, Japan, France, and the U.S. have been investigating its secrets, and their discoveries point to an element more potent and adaptable than vibranium: adamantium.
Indeed, adamantium has been officially incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, paving the way for a potential future MCU Wolverine to undergo the process of having his skeleton reinforced with this metal. Although we don’t receive any hints about Wolverine’s impending appearance, an essential aspect of his background has been established, and the groundwork has been laid. The question remains: What transpires next?
What adamantium means for the MCU’s future
In “Captain America: Brave New World,” although adamantium is first introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the movie primarily focuses on the larger narrative of Ross’ manipulation by Samuel Sterns rather than delving into the practical uses of this element. There’s only one sample of adamantium, and it serves as a plot device to guide viewers towards the bigger story, leaving little room for exploring its details further.
By the film’s conclusion, it’s clear that nations possessing research facilities on Celestial Island have reached an agreement to share the resource known as adamantium. This significant development in the MCU often attracts malicious figures who seek to misuse such opportunities for their personal advantage, potentially leading to the emergence of a supervillain.
At present, it’s all conjecture, but keep an eye out for adamantium potentially rising as a significant force in future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films such as “Thunderbolts*” and “Avengers: Doomsday”. The demand for it will be high, there will be attempts to acquire it, and most crucially, people will want to create weapons from it – and this is where a mutant named Logan comes into play. This is just one of the numerous narratives being woven through the MCU currently, so its realization might not be immediate, but if adamantium exists, Wolverine won’t be far behind… eventually.
