Captain America: Brave New World Continues A Weird WWE Trend In The MCU

Contains spoilers for “Captain America: Brave New World”

Many wrestling professionals have managed to move from the arena to acting, including Dwayne Johnson (formerly The Rock) and John Cena. In fact, Dave Bautista’s acting career took off significantly after he was cast as Drax in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, there’s been a peculiar and somewhat disheartening development lately – one that has hindered Marvel from propelling another WWE star to cinematic fame.

Capturing the Adventures of Captain America in a Fresh Universe”

The latest installment, “Captain America: Brave New World“, has hit the big screens, although initial responses have been mixed. Yet, it promises a wealth of content for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) enthusiasts. The movie introduces adamantium into the MCU’s timeline and offers a brief appearance by Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan. However, it’s missing one anticipated character – Seth Rollins. In May 2023, images surfaced of him dressed in green on the film’s set, sparking speculation that he might play a role in the upcoming “Captain America” sequel (known as “Serpent” within the movie). Nevertheless, upon watching “Brave New World,” fans will not spot Rollins anywhere. Instead, theories suggest that his character could be part of the Serpent Society in the “Captain America: Serpent” sequel.

As a gamer, I’ve been following the news about Seth Rollins and his exclusion from the Marvel film he was initially cast in. It seems that due to numerous reshoots and the addition of Giancarlo Esposito as Serpent’s Sidewinder, there just wasn’t enough room for Rollins anymore. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time a WWE star has been involved with Marvel only to be cut from the final version. Both Seth Rollins’ wife, Becky Lynch, and Damian Priest had brief involvements with Marvel but ended up getting sidelined as well. So, I can’t help but wonder why Marvel isn’t incorporating professional wrestlers into their recent films. It’s an intriguing question, to say the least!

Eternals and Black Panther 2 missed out on some WWE action as well

According to various reports, Becky Lynch filmed for the movie “Eternals,” but details about her role are scarce. It’s speculated that she may have appeared alongside Eros (played by Harry Styles), possibly in the post-credits scene. Marvel reportedly appreciated her performance, yet her character was eliminated due to the original ending being too somber. Although Styles remains in the film, it’s unclear if his cameo will significantly impact the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future. Some fans have also proposed that Lynch might have been cast as Siryn, considering her vibrant red hair. However, this theory seems unlikely since Siryn is a mutant rather than an Eternal.

During that time, professional wrestler Damian Priest was reportedly chosen for an undisclosed role in the movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. However, when he spoke to Chris Van Vliet in 2024, he remained tight-lipped about why his role didn’t appear in the final film. He simply mentioned, “There’s a lot to it, but essentially the part was taken from me, though not by Marvel.” It seems there were external factors involved, though the details remain unclear as it is unknown if he actually filmed any scenes for the sequel of “Black Panther”.

As a gamer, I must admit, it’s intriguing how things unfolded behind the scenes for Priest, Seth Rollins, and Lynch, who were all supposed to be part of Marvel projects. While it seems Priest’s exclusion might have been due to things not quite working out before filming began, the story changes when we talk about Rollins and Lynch, who actually shot their scenes.

Unfortunately, due to the clandestine nature of Marvel productions and actors wanting to maintain good relations with potential future employers, we may never fully understand what transpired with these scenes. However, on a positive note, this mystery leaves open the possibility for Rollins, Lynch, and Priest to potentially rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe in even bigger roles than initially planned. Here’s hoping for some epic cameos in the future!
