Among the highly controversial action movies produced by Hollywood legend (and current “Special Ambassador” working to revitalize the industry) is rapidly gaining popularity. Originally released in 2019, Sylvester Stallone stars as John Rambo for the last time in “Rambo: Last Blood,” a film where Rambo takes on a drug cartel after someone dear to him gets kidnapped.
In Netflix’s rankings, “Rambo: Last Blood” has moved up to position 7, with action films such as “Miss Congeniality,” “Rogue Agent,” and “Aftermath” (a film similar to “Die Hard”) ahead of it in the top spots. Directed by Adrian Grünberg from a script penned jointly by Matthew Cirulnick and Sylvester Stallone, “Last Blood” features an impressive cast including Paz Vega, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Adriana Barraza, Yvette Monreal, Genie Kim aka Yenah Han, Joaquín Cosío, Óscar Jaenada, and Sylvester Stallone himself. For more details about the movie, take a look at the official synopsis provided below.
In a peaceful setting of an Arizona ranch, Vietnam War veteran John Rambo spends his days tending to horses. He has formed a deep bond with Maria, a woman, and her granddaughter Gabriela. However, their tranquil life is disrupted when the ruthless Mexican cartel abducts Gabriela. In response, Rambo embarks on a fierce mission across the border, driven by both personal desire to save his loved one and vengeance against the kidnappers.
Rambo: Last Blood Boasts a Score of 81% From Audiences…but Only 26% From Critics
In a stark contrast from his initial portrayal in “First Blood,” Rambo: Last Blood showcased excessive, gory violence as he ruthlessly eliminated numerous adversaries. However, this action-packed movie sparked significant disagreement among both critics and viewers. On Rotten Tomatoes, it received a low score of 26% from the former, while on Popcornmeter, it garnered an impressive 81% approval rating from the latter. The general consensus among critics is that like its predecessors, Rambo: Last Blood prioritized gruesome violence over the once-compelling narrative of its character.
Last Blood” will be Stallone’s last appearance as the beloved action character. However, Stallone has shared that a prequel TV series featuring Rambo’s time in Vietnam is being developed. Back in 2022, he mentioned that this show would delve into Rambo’s past in Vietnam.
I have a strong feeling it’s about to occur. Initially, I envisioned a narrative similar to a Ken Burns documentary on Vietnam, featuring a young Rambo character who transforms into the iconic figure we know, having been football captain and then revealing his backstory. However, they seem more inclined towards a contemporary tale, where I am passing the mantle. It appears that moment is drawing near.
Regarding Rambo 6, Sylvester Stallone has ruled out the possibility of a traditional sequel, humorously stating in 2023, “I might let go of Rambo. He’s accomplished quite a lot, even though they want to make another one, but what would he be fighting now? Arthritis?
