A decade has passed since Paul King initially introduced our cherished Peruvian bear, Paddington, onto the silver screen, and he continues to be an endearing choice for children (and let’s not forget, adults too) everywhere. Post the 2017 sequel, King decided to move on, and now Dougal Wilson will make his directorial debut in the feature film, Paddington in Peru, which is slated to release on Valentine’s Day in 2025. So, grab your marmalade sandwiches, as we eagerly await the reviews for this upcoming children’s movie!
The upcoming film titled “Paddington 3” boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Ben Whishaw reprises his role as the voice of the cherished bear. Alongside him, Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, and others return. A newcomer to the franchise is Antonio Banderas, while Olivia Colman and Emily Mortimer step into the role of Mary Brown, previously played by Sally Hawkins. Critics are now weighing in on this much-anticipated movie. In a previous review for “Paddington in Peru“, Sarah El-Mahmoud was left with a cozy feeling and awarded it 4 out of 5 stars, expressing her thoughts as follows:
In Peru, Paddington Bear’s Adventure stays true to the franchise’s roots, with just a significant change of location as the main difference. It follows the familiar formula that has made this series successful, and since “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” I found myself feeling comfortably nostalgic during his comeback. Indeed, by the end, I was shedding happy tears after having chuckled at several amusing moments along the way.
According to Nick Schager from The Daily Beast, “Paddington 3” stands out as an exceptional family film. He particularly praises Olivia Colman’s performance as the Reverend Mother. Amidst a world that seems quite unforgiving these days, this charming and courteous British bear, according to Schager, is exactly the sort of hero we are in need of.
In the midst of its lively chaos, Paddington in Peru consistently emphasizes the underlying kindness of its protagonist. The climax revolves around the bear giving a stern gaze to a troubled enemy as a reminder to act courteously, be kind, and appreciate true riches. While Wilson’s follow-up might not be as creatively captivating as Paddington 2 (2017), it retains the same cheerful and empathetic spirit. It promotes the values of selflessness, altruism, generosity, and unity through an exhilarating storyline that acknowledges life’s dynamism, yet underscores the enduring nature of one’s affection for family and friends.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I’d like to share that Ross McIndoe from Slant awarded this film 3 out of 4 stars. He pointed out that despite Dougal Wilson taking these familiar characters on a global journey for the first Paul King-less adventure, the series has never seemed more comfortable and at ease in its own furry coat than it does here. In his words:
“Never before has this world felt so much like home as it does in this installment.
Similar to previous installments, Paddington’s choice of practical effects enhances its charm, giving tangibility to our protagonist’s environment. The movie skillfully incorporates CGI to place the bear seamlessly within live-action settings, from him lounging in a snug London living room to navigating Peru’s lush, verdant foliage. In terms of visual style, Wilson continues where King left off with a look that can be described as a lighter version of Wes Anderson’s aesthetic—filled with symmetrically arranged frames and vibrant colors reminiscent of a child’s storybook. Characters occasionally address the camera directly, and there’s even a scene where the Brown home is depicted as a dollhouse with part of it removed. This film proudly showcases its inspirations in every well-tailored scene.
According to Guy Lodge of Variety, “Paddington in Peru” maintains its vibrant and bustling atmosphere, but unlike the previous films by Paul King and Simon Farnaby that charmed both adults and children with their offbeat charm, this third installment leans more towards traditional children’s television programming. In simpler terms, Lodge suggests that while earlier Paddington movies had a unique, quirky appeal, the third one seems to follow a more predictable pattern for kids’ entertainment.
In Peru, Paddington’s latest adventure is brimming with energy, cheerful, and surprisingly bright – a quality that audiences who missed the 2017 release of “Paddington 2” will find appealing. While the film’s positive themes about immigrant identity and family values may be repetitive from previous installments, they remain relevant and worth reinforcing. Even though some of the humor isn’t as intricate or laugh-out-loud funny as in earlier films, Olivia Colman’s portrayal of a mischievous and devious character dressed as a nun serves as a delightful substitute.
Matt Schimkowitz from AV Club expresses a minor concern about the evolution of the Paddington guard, as he feels that the third movie seems to be straining to create genuine misadventures for the beloved bear character. He notes that there often isn’t much for the Brown family to engage in, comparing the film’s execution to a marmalade recipe with too much sugar and not enough fruit. However, he still appreciates Paddington in Peru, deeming it a pleasant experience overall. Schimkowitz awards it a C+ grade.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I must admit that Paddington’s Peruvian adventure doesn’t quite match the charm of his first two adventures. Yet, the title character continues to be an endearing figure, owing much to the goodwill he has amassed over time. Among the CGI creations, Paddington stands as one of the most emotionally resonant, a testament to the power of code and algorithms.
Brought to life by the exceptional talents of Ben Whishaw in another remarkable vocal performance, Paddington’s soft growl forms the solid base upon which the movie is built – and that foundation is as unyielding as his gaze. Nevertheless, Paddington requires a contrast, and this time around, it takes not one but two exceptional actors to fill the void left by the second film’s Hugh Grant.
In summary, many reviewers are suggesting that people should purchase tickets for a heartwarming experience with Paddington 3, even though opinions may vary on how it compares to its previous installments. The film has garnered an impressive 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is fantastic news for those eagerly anticipating its release. The new adventure of Paddington starts in cinemas on Valentine’s Day, February 14.
