In Brendan Hunt’s journey creating “Ted Lasso”, one spark of inspiration came from an extraordinary encounter he had with Jordan Peele. You remember that sensational bike scene between Roy and Jamie in Season 3? A part of its origin stems from the actor portraying Coach Beard cycling around Amsterdam with the director of “Nope”, and the tale behind this incident is both wild and amusing.
The heartwarming scenes in Ted Lasso are plentiful, but the bicycle scene stands out as one of the most memorable. Not only is it among my top picks from the series, but it also significantly strengthens the bond between Jamie and Roy in a humorous yet impactful manner. Interestingly, parts of this scene were influenced by Brendan Hunt’s personal experiences with comedy in Amsterdam, as he shared with Uproxx.
As a cinema enthusiast, I had quite the evening at my theater (Boom Chicago). Biking home with my girlfriend alongside Lijnbaansgracht, it was around three in the morning when I encountered Jordan Peele, walking instead of biking due to his discomfort with cycling. Seeing him there, I offered, “Jordan, let me pedal you home for the rest of the way!” Sharing a ride on someone’s wheel and holding onto them was quite typical in those moments. However, Jordan politely declined my offer, saying, “Brendan, no, thanks.
In this context, it appears that Peele plays the role of Roy and Hunt portrays Jamie. It’s unclear if the director has experience riding a bike or not, as he seemed apprehensive about cycling with the co-creator of Ted Lasso.
Indeed, the warning proved to be valid, as the actor portraying Coach Beard proceeded with his narrative thereafter.
‘I invited Jordan to go home with me. “Jordan Peele,” I urged, “hop on my bicycle now!” And remarkably, he did. The memory of that moment is still vivid in my mind. “Are you alright? Are you alright?” I asked. Then, in a flash, we both tumbled to the ground in Amsterdam. We couldn’t stop laughing as Jordan fell back and I picked myself up to continue pedaling off.’ (At this point, Hunt mimics a fall from his chair to illustrate their encounter.) ‘Well, we both admitted defeat that night, laughed it off, and promised to meet again tomorrow.’
In this situation, the confusion mirrors the turmoil found within the bicycle scenes from Ted Lasso. Yet, it seems as though no one was instructing others on bike-riding fundamentals, and there were no passionate shouts of “For grandad!”.
As a movie enthusiast, I must say that the whirlwind of events, the clash and the backdrop all gel remarkably well in this production. It’s truly impressive to see Jordan Peele, the visionary behind masterpieces like “Get Out” and “Nope,” as well as half of the dynamic duo from “Key & Peele,” contributing to one of my favorite scenes in one of Apple TV+’s top-tier series. Truly, this is a hilarious and unexpected fusion of worlds!
In that scene, the funny lines from Ted Lasso, coupled with the outstanding camaraderie between actors Phil Dunster and Brett Goldstein, often have me reflecting on the moment shared by Roy and Jamie. And what makes it especially poignant is learning about its backstory.
It seems that we should express gratitude towards Jordan Peele for playing a role in creating such an outstanding moment in Ted Lasso. Each time I revisit the series with my Apple TV+ membership, this pivotal moment between Jamie and Roy’s relationship and all the bike-related antics are eagerly anticipated. My appreciation for it has grown since learning that two artists I greatly admire experienced something similar in reality.
