In a recent disclosure, actor Mel Gibson, renowned for his portrayal of “Mad Max” Rockatansky in the initial installments of George Miller’s franchise, shared which film from the dystopian universe he cherishes the most. Despite Gibson’s ability to spark controversy, it’s safe to say that this time, we find ourselves aligning with his preference.
According to Screen Rant’s report, Mel Gibson attended MegaCon Orlando and discussed his involvement in the Mad Max series from 1979 to 1985. In total, he starred in three Mad Max films: the original Mad Max (1979), The Road Warrior (1981), whose official title was Mad Max 2 but was rebranded for American audiences, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). At a recent panel, the director known for hits like Braveheart and the Lethal Weapon series disclosed that his preferred Mad Max movie is The Road Warrior.
In my opinion, the second part stood out as the top-notch one. It was simply captivating and action-packed. For viewers like myself, I felt it was the most straightforward. It delivered plenty of heart-pounding moments. The special effects were minimal; they merely tossed objects from a truck.
Mel Gibson, renowned for directing films such as Apocalypto, The Passion of the Christ, and Hacksaw Ridge, wasn’t just a director behind the camera all the time. At the age of 21, he made his acting debut in the little-known Australian drama Summer City. Then, in 1979, he starred as Max Rockatansky in Miller’s Mad Max, a dystopian action film about a former policeman who turns vigilante to capture a dangerous gang of motorcycle riders. This movie was both successful and relatively low-budget, eventually becoming one of the most profitable films ever made. It marked the beginning of a franchise that continues to thrive today.
After Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Miller temporarily stepped away from the series, while Gibson chose to leave it completely. Although the third film was well-received, it didn’t achieve significant box office success. It took 30 years for Miller to rejuvenate the concept with Mad Max: Fury Road, a franchise revival that introduced a new Max and garnered global praise for its daring and adventurous action style. This film was nominated for numerous Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won six Oscars on the night. However, in 2024, the prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was released to much fanfare but ultimately flopped at the box office, effectively ending Miller’s plans for future sequels.
‘The Road Warrior’ Is One of the Best Action Movies of All Time
1981 saw Mel Gibson making notable appearances in both “The Road Warrior” and “Gallipoli.” The latter film significantly boosted his reputation as a serious actor with exceptional skills. Nevertheless, it was “The Road Warrior” that garnered more praise from critics and spectators. This high-octane action movie showcased minimal dialogue but demonstrated George Miller’s ability to bend the genre’s conventions effectively, delivering an uncompromising and intense experience.
Renowned critic Roger Ebert succinctly expressed his thoughts about the film in his review: “The Road Warrior” is essentially an action-packed movie, fueled by raw energy, with only the most minimal storyline. It offers a glimpse into a violent future, but it doesn’t delve deeper into this world through characters or dialogue. Instead, it throws you straight into one of the most unyieldingly aggressive movies ever created. Watching Mad Max 2, I left feeling slightly dazed and my ears still ringing from the intensity of the soundtrack; while I didn’t exactly “enjoy” the film, I can’t say I’ll easily forget it… The experience is both terrifying and, at times, nauseating, yet oddly thrilling. This movie stands out due to its exceptional craftsmanship, making Mad Max 2 a unique cinematic experience.
