In a chat with the YouTube channel Game Changers, renowned Bollywood director Karan Johar expressed his belief that Alia Bhatt was destined for stardom in their film Student Of The Year. Yet, he admitted that her exceptional acting skills took him by surprise. He further mentioned that while Alia had an emotional debut with SOTY, Highway marked her professional breakthrough, according to him.
In the same interview, the director of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was questioned if he had taken a significant risk by casting debutantes Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, and Alia Bhatt in his film. To this, the director replied that Varun and Sid were already working with him as assistants on Shah Rukh Khan’s movie, My Name Is Khan. Additionally, he first encountered Alia when she visited his office after school hours.
When he set the three actors into motion, he asked his team to handle them as if they were renowned celebrities. The film director of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai explained that by instilling confidence in them, they would approach the camera with the same aplomb as seasoned stars. Conversely, if treated as novices, their performances might be more akin to those given by amateurs.
Karan Johar promptly clarified that he wasn’t pampering them but rather building up their confidence to deliver stellar performances when the cameras rolled, transforming them into leading film stars. Reflecting on the 12-day workshop he led in his apartment with three famous personalities, the director-producer disclosed that he aimed to create a comfortable environment and foster friendship, ensuring they wouldn’t view him as their director.
