This week, the director Brady Corbet admitted that his Oscar-nominated movie brought in absolutely no financial return for him.
Corbet recently produced three ads in Portugal, and he mentioned this fact during his interview on the Marc Maron podcast. It’s worth noting that it was the first time in quite a while that he had earned any income.
Corbet further clarified that he and his creative collaborator, Mona Fastvold, earned nothing from the last two movies they produced.
Prior to “The Brutalist”, directors Corbet and Fastvold had previously collaborated on the 2018 film “Vox Lux”. Notably, “The Brutalist” has garnered ten nominations for this year’s Academy Awards, among which are nods for Best Actor (Adrien Brody), Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones), Best Director (Corbet) and Best Picture.
When Maron inquired about Corbet’s remarks regarding payment, the director responded, “Indeed. In truth, it was none. We simply managed to survive using a salary from three years back.
The cost impact isn’t just on Corbet; he pointed out. He mentioned that he’s talked to numerous filmmakers whose movies are up for awards this year who struggle to pay their rent. In other words, this is an actual issue they face.
The director pointed out that it’s not their role to advertise a movie, and they emphasized that if one examines films shown at Cannes over a year ago, their own film premiered in September, meaning they’ve been working on this project for six months with no salary since they can’t find the time to work elsewhere due to their commitments. At present, they’re unable to accept writing jobs.
As a dedicated fan, I can tell you that Corbet described the extended media tour as feeling like a grueling six-month interrogation. To add to that, he shared an impressive figure, revealing he conducted no less than 90 interviews just last week!
He mentioned that it’s a seven-day-a-week commitment, with no end in sight. It involves continuous travel, even on weekends like Saturdays and Sundays. Since the Christmas break, he hasn’t had a single day off, and his time off during the holidays was only four days.
